COILOVER CONVERSION... Inputs???

i have a 2003 XLT 4x4 with torsion keys cranked about 3" plus a 3" BL w/ 33's. i was planning on getting the RCD kit until it got discontinued. so now i have been looking into a fabricated coilover conversion. i have been talking to 2 different shops and each have a slightly dif approach. end result i should gain 4-5" of lift after the 3" torsion is removed and w/ my BL will be able to clear 35's. both are quoting about $3000 parts (2.5 fox w/ resivors), fabrication (uni-*****, upper/lower arms, mounts, etc.), and labor.

what are your inputs? has anyone done this yet? any other ideas? how does price sound?

thanks for the input!!!

there is only 1 manufactuerd kit for the '01+ 4x4 rangers, that's superlift which is a piece of crap! the good thing about RCD was the coilover conversion in a kit that's very versitile for moderate rock crawling and moderate desert fun.

THREAD CONTINUES: any custom fab'd jobs out there for a 01+ (mines an '03) other than a SAS???

Look at MudSlanger's coilover swap thread, you can do the same thing he did with smaller coilovers.

Problem is that he used RCD parts.

OP: Superlift isn't crap BTW. The torsion keys you have are crap.

RCD is still in production... they just discontinued our 4x4 kit (too pricy and wasn't being sold. also, a few shops were saying that people were bringing them back with problems). other than that, RCD is still ROCKIN' 'N' ROLLIN'!!!

oh yeah, i have seen that thread before.

unfortunately that can not be done any more since RCD discontinued our kit, which means no parts from the parts list either. bummer! that was actually a pretty good option that mudslinger did.

further more, having a fulling fab'd coilover kit will still do better than that. has anyone else on here done this yet?

Just because they aren't making the kit anymore doesn't mean they don't have extra brackets laying around. CALL THEM

i guess i can check, but it think it will still end up coming out close to price i'm being quoted at my fab shop and the setup should be better! i'm pretty set on having them do the work...

mainly just checking to see if anyone else has done this and the price they paid to make sure i'm getting a good deal.

MudSlangers setup was closer to a grand I think for it all. He did all the work himself though

yeah so that's $1000 + $1600 (for the SL) + install (i won't be doing it), so that puts me over my quote (with fox 2.5 w/ resivoirs). i gues it would be worth it if i had a "grease thumb", lol...

Just keep in mind, a quote is just that, a quote. With custom fab, things can take longer that anticipated. They might be half way through the project, and be like **** this is going to take longer than we thought. Not trying to deter you, but just keep that in mind

EXACTLY!!! that's why i'm checking with you guys to see if anyone has done something similar. this way i have a better idea of what to expect in term of type of setup, time in shop, and cost!

my whole intensions are to just have a very versitile rig. no plans on fullout rockcrawling in "double black diamonds" or hitting the whoops at 60. therefore i see no need for a SAS or the DB kit. right now with my 3" torsion crank, 3" BL, and 33's i have been able to handle the best of both worlds, but with a horrible ride quality. time to get something done with $3000!!!

well, looks like there is more involved than anticipated... the project is still in the works and minds of the fabricators, but it might end up running as much as the DB or Camburg kits (with less functionality)... DAMN!!!!!!!!!!

who knows, something may be worked out. fingers crossed! i might just have to go with the SL coilover swap like Mudslinger, but with fabbed UCA's to be able to run 2.5's... don't know... we'll see... the hunt continues!!!

For that kind of money, you could EASILY do a solid axle with leaf springs and be way ahead. You could probably even get the fabricators to do it for that kind of money.

Or just get the superlift. That kit is hella strong (mine even survived rolling 3 times and still went to get installed on 2 other trucks) where as RCD's brackets broke on several occasions. You won't be disappointed, so long as you don't crank your torsion bars all the way up like you already have. THAT'S the reason your truck rides like crap.
