upper & lower ball joint replace on 97 4x4

I have never done ball joints on a 4x4, nor uppers, either. Does anybody have a "how-to" on it, or am I right in guessing that I am going to have to remove the spindle, axel, etc? HELP as I am off today and planned on doing it today.

Calling all you gurus!! Got everything down to just the spindle on the driver's side but can't get the spindle off. All the bolts are removed, and I can slide the axle in and out a little, but can't get the spindle to knock off from the knuckle!

HELP!!!!!!!!!!!

I have a haynes. Read it cover to cover, and what it says is that once the 5 bolts come out of the spindle, if necessary use a soft hammer and knock it off. Soft hammer, big hammer, everything I can think of, and it still wont come off.

I would recommend an acetylene torch. This is always the last resort but they don't call it the blue tipped wrench for no reason.

yeah, tried that too. I am correct in understanding that the spindle is held on by 5 bolts that are pressed into the back of the knuckle, right? So, once those bolts are gone, it should just pop off, right?

Any other way to replace those ball joints without taking the spindle off?

well, after 3 beers and a really BFH, the spindles finally let go. Good thing I bought some new ones, cuz these are torn to hell.

Found out that the pass side axle nut was almost all the way off, and its no wonder the u-joint went bad.

From the time the spindles dropped, it only took me about an hour to replace the ball joints and u-joint.

Man, I love this BFH!!!
