Rear Upper Shock Mount Broken

Hey guys,

I have been looking around on this forum for quite a while now - you have a real nice site here, bunch of great information, and members. I am happy that I am finally a member

My 98 Ford Ranger 3.0L V6 Auto 2WD has a broken rear upper shock mount (driver's side). I have read quite a few posts on this site about this problem. I figured this is the best place to get the information I need:

Questions:

1) The original mount is riveted on, correct? I will have to grind the heads off the rivets, right?

2) Where is the best place to buy the replacement shock mount? Is it only available online, or will a local auto parts store have it?

3) I just want to get a replacement shock mount for a 98 Ford Ranger right? Anything else I should know before ordering?

3) What else will I need to complete this repair? A bunch of washers to get the correct angle...?

4) Basically the repair goes something like this: Grind off rivets and remove old mount, put in the new mount with washers to get the right angle, am I missing anything major here?

Thanks very much for your help in advance, I appreciate it very much. I have put this off as long as possible, and this is my work truck so I can't have this break down. Planning to fix this as soon as I get the information I need.

I will check this post frequently so I can answer any questions you guys may have.

Any other information that you may have that would be helpful would be great.

Erick

i dunno where you can get one but i do know they are put on with rivets and yes cutting is recommended. you can re-attach them w/ grade 8 hardware.

Thank you very much for the replies and information guys. :)

In that link you provided, is that a generic picture? It does not look like what I need. From what I remember, the mount has a female end to accept the threaded stud on the shock, the one in the picture is for a female end with a bushing (on the shock). If you could clarify this it would really help me out.

I found a website that sells the Dorman shock mount you mentioned.

So basically, this is the plan to fix the broken mount:

1) Grind off rivets.

2) Remove old shock mount.

3) Install Dorman shock mount, using grade 8 hardware.

Is this the basic idea for the repair? Anything that I am missing?

*Something I read on another thread mentioned using washers to get the right angle. Do I have to worry about this using Dorman part number 924-408? Or does this not apply if I use that mount?*

Any other information you think may be helpful would be greatly appreciated.

I would like to do this as soon as possible, and don't want to run into any problems - this is my only vehicle and work truck, and want to avoid any downtime.

Thanks again!

Erick

ranger shocks in the rear are eyelet to eyelet like so:

the upper mount wont make much of a difference if its a slight angle, but the dorman kit will come with all hardware needed
