pinch bolt problems. Any ideas?

I'm in the process of a coilover conversion and superlift install. everything has been going ok and I'm putting things back together now. I'm not able to get the pinch bolt back in the knuckle to hold the upper ball joint in. It is at the correct depth so that the bolt would pass through the indentation but it won't push through. I have the side i'm working on jacked up to compress the coilover. Is there a better way to do this? Thanks for any ideas.

The bolt from the stock knuckle is m10x1.5. I can put the stock knuckle on the upper ball joint and push the pinch bolt through without any problem. The with superlift knuckle I can't get this size bolt through. The upper control arms are moog. I'm thinking of trying a smaller size bolt, but that's probably not a good idea. M9 bolts aren't easy to get, 3/8 is still to big. Guess I'll get an m8 and a 5/16 and see how snug they are.

On my Superlift knuckles (on my 2001 Edge) the ball joint upper shaft doesn't bottom out against the knuckle, while also compressing the rubber boot, when the pinch bolt grooves are lined up. There is some of the ball joint shaft showing underneath the upper arm. I didn't like it because it seems to me that it would weaken the entire assembly, but I ran with it and it's been trouble free for over 20,000 miles. I did have to use a steel rod that just fit the bolt hole a little loose and use it to align the bolt notches better before my bolt would actually go in..

Thanks,

The joint does seem to sit just a little higher. I definitely had the hole in the knuckle and the groove in the ball joint lined up. Never had trouble with this part before, but there is usually something small that slows down progress. I ended up putting everything back together with an m8 bolt pinching the knuckle for now. I'm not driving it like this just needed to get it back on the ground. I'm going to get a tapered punch and try to line it up better that way. The other thing with the knuckle was the dust shield for the brakes didn't line up perfectly. I had to slot two of the holes by about 1/8 an inch and check that it didn't rub on the rotor. Everything else went pretty smooth. I changed all the seals and bearings in the front diff housing and put a torsen diff in. That will be fun to try out in the snow this winter once I get the pinch bolt sorted.

I had a similar problem with my ranger, I installed a 3 inch ebay lift (becuase im broke &#128514 and I couldnt compress the springs enough to get that bolt in, i had to jack up the arm and use a ratchet strap snaked through the spring to compress it more. It was a royal pain in the a**!

I got this fixed awhile ago. The problem was I had the knuckles from the 98-99 kit #k357. I ended up getting the knuckles from the #k358 kit. They fit great and the pinch bolt went in no problem.... I'm sure the other knuckles would work, but the pinch bolt hole would need to be drilled out slightly. Anyone know the difference between the 99 and 2000+ rangers that would cause the problem? I know about vacuum hubs, but I thought the upper ball-joints and everything else was the same. Guess I have an extra set of knuckles now. Thanks for the help.
