Upper control arm question

Upper control arm question

One or 2 of my brakes squeak when I let the brake pedal release. So I took off my front left wheel and greased up where the pad slides. I took the drum off the rear too, but didn't know what to do, so just put it back on. The squeak is still there. Anyone know why a brake would squeak?

I was looking at the upper control arms and the passenger side is different, it has adjustments, I suppose for alighnment or something, but why wouldn't it be on both sides?
I was looking at performance suspension upgrades and wondered if they had the adjustment deal too, I'm sure they don't. It just looks retarded having all the bolts and stuff on there.

It's more than likely the rear. Pull the drum back off and take some lube or grease and rub it on the backing plate about 1/2 way down the shoe where they rub together. And at the bottom near the adjuster and at the top near the wheel cylinder. That should take care of it. It not, i'd get the drums machined if you've never had them cut before.

EDIT: the adjustment bolts are for camber. I dunno why only one side would have it...because you have to buy "camber/caster kit" from ford to get an alignment on what should be a factory mother fawking adjustment, but if i made a **** load of money and could charge you for something that should come standard on the damn truck, i would too.....sorry for the rant.

I was going to use grease but I was in a rush and just used oil, which is probably bad to use.
What about the control arm deal?

Camber and caster adjustments are both done on the upper control arm pivots and are interdependent. The extra adjustment on the right side allows for adjustment of the "caster split" without compromising the camber adjustments. Ford could have put it on either side and it would have had the same effect.

Interestingly enough, it appears that Ford eliminated this extra adjustment sometime in the 2003 model year. My late 2003 does not have the extra hardware that was present on the 2002-back.

If you want to tell where the squeak is coming from, use the emergency brake only. If it still squeaks it's the rear brakes. Otherwise it's the fronts. If you want to fix the backs. Get some fine like 100 grit sand paper and sand the drums and the shoes. If it's the front you can sand the front pads as well. If it's a squeak you can take the pads out and spray disc brake quiet or a thick coat of cheap spray paint onto the metal part of the pads themselves. As for the control arms the bolts are for alignment. Don't screw with them.

most likely you have a glazed front rotors/pads or rear drums/shoes. its common

Disk breaks squeek by nature. You will never completly get rid of it.

Our trucks do have Camber adjustment built into them. The bolts on the upper control arms are eccentric cams stock. But the way they are cut limits the amount of differant adjustments you can make. Infact the amount of available adjustment is quite small, thus the reason they sell you the "Cam Kit".. ok, thats enough out of me..
