tires and Dana 44
 

Right now I have a pretty much stock Dana 44 up front with 38x15.50 Swampers. I've been thinking for awhile of getting some slightly narrower tires for at least the front.

Is there a general concensus on not running any larger (than 38") a tire on a stock 44? I feel like I've been pretty damn lucky having not broken anything on it yet, all while have a good amount of power/torque from a 4.0.

Right now I'm lookin' at a couple of 37x14 Bias IROKs. Besides that, the other two in mind are 39.5x13.50 Bias IROK and 38.5x14.50 TSL/SX. All will be run on a 15x10 wheel.

is a 39.5x13 really that much different than a 38x15.5 for overall mass?

its probably pushing it but id guess your going to break the ring and pinion first.

when you put the 14 bolt in the rear are you keeping the Dana 44 upfront..?

37's even with those you are going to be pushing the limits of a locked 44.

On a '97 F-150. Wuz ran for three yrs with no prob's before it wuz traded in.

How was it used? Mall crawler, mud then yeah I could see it lasting but on rocks hell no.

i say 37 irok, but you already have a 39 irok???

from my second hand experience, usually 37s are the borderline size for a locked 44 that actually gets beaten on. I dont mean mud and driving fast, rocks and a heavy foot.

Was a daily driver, it seen some light off road never beat on. He had like 13 or 15 inches of lift on it. He bought the first fabratech kit the made for it. Took use two weekends to put on. switched over to 3" spring packs in the back and coils up front. We did put some 44's on there for likea week and cleared the nicely. But that's a hole nuther story.

so it was a mall crawler, and tire size on a mall crawler is irrelevant.

Im not trying to issue an insult, but they just dont see the abuse. going from 6000 rpm to full wedge under a rock is just a tad more stressful than stop ad go traffic ;)

Agreed, he's not trying to be a dick pace, but it's just a fact that your going to put way more stress on axle parts jumping around at 4000+ RPM's on Rocks they you are cruising around town.

I guess the best question here is what does 2002FX4 use his truck for? Medium off-road use with some DD? I guess that's the one factor that I'm not seeing here.

my two cents says 37s would be max on a d44. That's what I am gonna run on my zuk with half the weight and 1/3 the horsepower and I still wonder if I am pushing it. May go ahead and get chromoly shafts.

I say you're thinkin' like I'm thinkin'. And yes, I already have a 39.5x13.50 Bias IROK for a spare.. and now in heinsight may be abit of a wrong choice. But hey, I have a spare regardless.


I'm gonna get a couple of the 37x14.00 Bias IROK's.

Like I said initially, I feel I've been damn lucky to not have broken anything thus far running the huge meats I currently have. I'm also not planning to upgrade my shafts to alloys anytime soon, so the best thing to do would be to downsize just a hair rather than upgrade. Plus I'm going to have a doubler, so I'll have the opportunity to put even more stress on the internals. ;)

Oh and for anyone who isn't quite sure what my truck is built/used for, it's pretty much a good rock crawler.. or gettin' there at least! :cool:

so like #2 crushed limestone or #4 washed field stone? :shrug:
