Torsion Bar Swap
I was looking at swaping my torsion bars for heavier rated ones cause right now they wont crank to give me a lift. I believe I have "F" rated torsion bars and I can get "B" rated ones from the delership for $70 a piece. Has anyone ever changed out there torsion bars and was it hard or easy? And was it a long process? I plan on doing the work my self with some help of some friends.

its not that hard.. but your gonna need a gear puller.

just get the 1 rated bars and dont look back.
and its not hard to do once you have done them once. :crazy: |
This may be a stupid question, but what is a gear puller and what does it do?

then ya gotta move that little plate. then when u take the gear puller off the t-bar will have nothing on it so u can slide it out

theres a how to on it somewhere... i remember it having an explorer and he was dong the t-bar flip.. let me see if i can find it

Sweet thanks guys! I really appreate it. I hope I can rent that tool somewhere. Maybe Auto Zone will have it. I'll have to wait to get home to look at that link, it wont work on Government Computers.

Autozone will let you rent the tool for free. Get the 2/3 arm puller.

i just took my torsion bars out and didnt need a puller or anything, just had the arms at full droop and undid the tensioner bolt, just slid em right out

how did u get the part out that the bolt threads into? every time i have taken them out the key is applying alot of force on them. it might just be the difference between 2wd and 4wd.

Zach i did it the same way Alon is describing it when i did my SL. In fact I had a ten year old boy help me put the t-bars back up! The tension is very very slight at full droop with the shocks disconnected, but just use your gut instinct when you do it...ie if you feel like youre gonna get smacked in the melon with the t-bar, then dont mess with it.

the bars i have taken out have alot of tension on them when they come off and that is at full droop but with the shocks still installed.

yeah drop them shocks and it should allow them to droop further....if not, lower the front of the LCA to the ground first, you should be able to control the tension with your arms....at least i would hope.... but i never had any troubles with removing mine...so

oh ive never had issues taking mine out or putting them in. i was just saying it would be best to have the tool.
