Wheel hub replacement

I have a Ď98 Ford Ranger. 4x4, 4L-V6. The passenger side wheel hub was making a dull hum thatís gradually changing to a higher pitch whine.
i searched around but Iím not sure what part to get. Got a quote from Les Schwab that was $510 just for one. They quoted the part as being around $300. I know that 4x4s are more complicated then my old Taurus, but that seems like a lot. Is a wheel hub fairly easy to change out? Iím still not sure what specific part to buy. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

The only special tool you need is the socket for the cv axle nut which is a pretty large size. Other than that, simple hand tools will suffice. If you live in the salt belt, and your truck is full of corrosion, a propane torch might be your best friend. It's up to you, but while you're in there, check out the CV axle and make sure it isn't worn as well. If so, replace it while you have the truck apart. You need to make sure you buy a wheel bearing assembly for a 98 Ranger. Should run you around $150-$200 for the part, depending on whether you buy the cheapest one or a higher quality one like Moog. When you reassemble the truck, make sure to use red Loctite on the bolts that hold the brake caliper mounting bracket to the steering knuckle. They have a tendency to back themselves out if you don't.

Do 1998 rangers have 4 wheel abs? I was browsing on Rockauto, but they have many different brands and styles. Mostly it’s either 2 or 4 wheel abs. I was thinking that it shouldn’t be much different than the 99 Taurus we had. Is there anything I should be aware of with 4 wheel drive?

Crawl under the truck and look at the wheel bearing hubs. If you see a wire going to them, you have four wheel ABS.

You really won't see much difference on a 4x4 Ranger than what you might have seen with your FWD Taurus. It's all pretty much the same.
