I have physics next year lol. I do all my chem, drilling, and geology classes (I'm actually a petroleum engineer major) first. For some reason they put physics off for a while at KU.

The results are similar to each car hitting a wall at 60 mph.

A car travelling 120 mph that hits a solid wall will absorb nearly 100% of the energy because the wall will not deflect much and return most of the energy back to the car.

Typically cars absorb/use energy in an impact by collapsing. Typically solid objects that cannot collapse use energy by accelerating or fragmenting. If the energy is not great enough to accelerate or fragment the solid object, it transfers the energy to something else (the car in this case).
right. you said exactly what i meant to the letter... OF COURSE the total collision force would be doubled in a head on crash... but due to the crumple of the cars each would only take force equal to hitting a barrier at the same speed... provided the cars are the same mass and velocity...

i wonder if carmakers realize that compact cars with no better structural strength don't need VTEC?
