15" Stock Wheels: What should I look for?

Hi I just acquired my father's 1998 Ranger with 14" wheels. The tires on it are 215/70/14's. I've noticed that the 14" tires are hard to come by as in selection thus I thought maybe I should look at factory 15" wheels.

How hard are 15" stock wheels to find in good condition?

If I buy aftermarket what is the offset and lug pattern? I assume I'll want a 15x7 wheel so my speedometer will be correct.

Also what size tire would go on the 15's?

I have some 15's that I just took off my truck. Shipping would be expensive to texas though. Check out summit racing for some rims. Crager are a good cheap rim to start with. The wider the wheel it won't effect the speedo. That is changed by size of the tire. Also I would go with like a 225/75/15. That is what came stock on my 98. Also you want a wheel that is 5x4.5 bolt pattern. And a 15x7 or 15x8 would look good.

Hope all that helps.

You will be ok with a 15x7 or 15x8 on a 5x4.5 bolt pattern. My stock tires were 235/75/15's.

Well I'm on a search for some nice stock rims in 15". I prefer alloys over steel wheels.

Should I look at 16's?

You can look at any size wheel you want, but the bigger the wheel, the smaller the tire you would need to run to keep the speedo correct. While 225/70R15 was stock tire size on newer Rangers, with your stock tire size of 215/70R14, you would need to run a 215/65R15 or a 225/60R15 to keep the speedo close.

Here's a tire calculator to compare tire sizes. It'll tell you diameter, circumference and how much the speedo will be affected while comparing 2 tires.

I have a nice set of stock '99 Explorer 15x7 teardrop alloy wheels with 235-60-15 tires.
Tires have 500 miles on them. Wheels were on Explorer for 4 years. Too bad you are in Texas, or I'd say check 'em out. Wheel/ tire combo was used on my '84 beater Ranger for a couple months.

16's would be ok too, once again, you would have to go with a lower profile tire for clearance and speedo accuracy, cherokee wheels will work but the back spacing is alot more than a ranger rim, meaning they will be "sucked" in farther, most cherokees are 5" BS and rangers are around 3.5 BS

Hate to bump an old thread but I got a guy who says these came from a 2001 Explorer and is selling these.

Also I read somewhere that you can't use all Explorer wheels. What year is the cutoff?

What do you think?

You would be fine with those. I think the cut off is when they went to independent rear suspension.
Oh, and BTW, I have a set of stock teardrop exploder wheels, and a set of stock steel chromies if'n yer interested.

I ran the exploder wheels that have the same offset as those, and they appeared to have the same offset as the stock wheels on my truck.
