im looking at getting new rims for my truck. i am currently on 16" rims and was looking at going to a 15". i was wondering if there was any pros or cons to running a 15 instead of a 16? only reason is because i am looking at getting new tires to and i see that tires are cheaper if you have a 15" rim.

IMO 16s look better than 15s, but if i were you id go 15s. I have 16s, and really wish i would of gone 15s because tires are sooooo much cheaper. If you think about it, that extra inch is gonna cost you thousands of $$$ in the long run buying tires

The pro is cheaper tires and cheaper wheels, with many more options for backspace on the wheels. Plus, there's more options in tire sizes and styles as well.

 

i had that same debate w/ myself when i bought rims/tires. the 15s look wayyyy better than i thought they would. like everyone else said, rims are cheaper, tires are cheaper, and you dont have to mess w/ the metric sizes. they actually say 33/12.50/15 and so on w/ other sizes.

 

yep im getting new wheels and 15" is the only option :)

 

You also get more sidewall. Which equals to a bigger foot print when you air the tires down. Not much but everything counts.

 

I would go with 16's myself. I would do that because tires may be cheaper for 15's right now but 16's are going to get cheaper because less manufacturers are using 15's. They are using 16's+. Also is you look around you can find 16" tires that are the same size in 15" in relation to height and width that are the same price or very close. It is your choice though.

 

15's. That's only because I think they are the best size due to tire price, and looks. I hate big wheels.

I went from 16s to 15s. it was cheaper to buy tires and wheels in 15s than just tires in 16s when i got my 35s. lol. its a no brainer.

 

I wish I got 15's. But hey I like my 16's for the look.

Just step up to 17"s and the tire choices come back. 16" is kind of an odd size. If you want bigger offroad tires, 15"s are your best bet.

 

looks like im going to go with the 15's. is changing rim size going to mess with my computer? i know since im going to be getting bigger tires my spedo is going to be off but am i going to have to worry about anything else?

 

I just finished shopping a new set of tires for my Ranger. It seems to me that it used to be there were far more choices in tread pattern and sizes for a 15" wheel. Now that seems to be less so. I think FullThrottle here has it right; more new trucks are being outfitted with 16+" wheels from the factory. This has led to more tire manufacturers offering new tread designs in 16" or better. Also I think manufacturers are producing and distributors are stocking more of those sizes. This leads to more discounts.

So we may see the tables turning on 15" vs 16" wheels.

As an example, I noticed that several of Coopers newer models are not offered in 15" sizes at all!

Nevertheless. It seems pretty clear that I will be able to get BFG AT's in my choice of 15" sizes for a while still. I am a big fan of these tires, so until that changes, I'm a happy camper w/ my 15" wheels.

I would go 16's personally. But my issue is that I can't afford both at the same time, so I'm getting 33's for the stocker's, then buy the rims.

 

16's i cant stand when guys go from 16's or 17's to 15's..its like putting a set of 14's on you car cuz its cheaper....

 

i would like to do that because i go to off road races every year and they run 17 inch wheels. so i could get tear offs for dirt cheap that would be awsome. my only problem is my truck is a daily driver. so thats really not an good idea for me

yeaa for one they're not DOT tires, two they're SUPER soft and wouldn't last for **** on the road.. 3, if they're throwing the tires away you dont want them, I see sets of red label (comp compound) tires for $1600-2000

 

I went form the stocker 16's to my current 15's and it was the best thing I did - I had WAY more selection, and saved a hell of alot of money - hundreds of dollars for my full set of tires and wheels. All depends on what you want, if you plan on going rear disc brakes you might not be able to fit them with 15" wheels, so in that case stepping up is a good thing, gives more room for larger discs.

Plus, as stated before, on a lifted truck, 15's make it look extra beefy with that bigger sidewall and larger footprint.
