Another way is to use a tire size calculator and juggle the width and aspect ratio until you get the diameter you want. Be sure that the tire width you pick is compatible with the wheel width. Recommended wheel widths are usually available in the specifications chart at the tire manufactures site.
There are many calculators on the net. This one lets you compare two tire sizes at once. It also give whatever speedo error may result from a diameter mismatch.

It does not include "inch-size" truck tires but it is great for comparing car tires.

I have been skimming through threads over at www.mazda3forums.com. It's a site not unlike this one focusing on the Mazda3 sedans and hatchbacks. My GF has an '05 3 sedan and I'm considering looking for a hatch to replace truckzilla. I've been reading up on issues people have had and interesting mods folks are doing.. and I came across this:

Read the quote in the first post.. I like it because it's quite amusing. Basically he describes why very large wheels are actually a very bad idea. In the process he pokes some fun at the 'bling-bling' types going for very large wheels. I love the sense of humor.. Reminds me of Dave and Julie from ORR.
My impression is that anything above 17" isn't really a very good idea unless you're only after apearance. If you're after performance 16 or 17" seems to be the sweet spot.

I got it. i think i want to go with a 285/35/18 at least in the rear in the rear, which is about a 26x11.25x18 which keeps the over all height the same but gives me a little bit more width. I don't about the front a 245/40/18 would be the same height in the front but not as wide.
I am also thinking about getting a set of mickey tompson ET slicks and put them on my stock wheels for when i go to the track.
Edit: dam Zack we must have been typing at the same time.
