More wheel less tire ?

If this was covered before I can't get searches to work so I am sorry.

I have 17 inch wheel on the cobra and I want to put 18's on but keep the over all size of the tire the same. Same height more wheel less tire. How do you figure out the new tire size.

ex...245/50R20, 245x50=?, ?+20=overall height
ok so that example comes out to roughly a 30x10x20 so my question is how do you take that example and figure out what size tire gives you a 30x10x24

Another way is to use a tire size calculator and juggle the width and aspect ratio until you get the diameter you want. Be sure that the tire width you pick is compatible with the wheel width. Recommended wheel widths are usually available in the specifications chart at the tire manufactures site.

There are many calculators on the net. This one lets you compare two tire sizes at once. It also give whatever speedo error may result from a diameter mismatch.

It does not include "inch-size" truck tires but it is great for comparing car tires.

I have been skimming through threads over at www.mazda3forums.com. It's a site not unlike this one focusing on the Mazda3 sedans and hatchbacks. My GF has an '05 3 sedan and I'm considering looking for a hatch to replace truckzilla. I've been reading up on issues people have had and interesting mods folks are doing.. and I came across this:

http://www.mazda3forums.com/index.php?topic=10243.0

Read the quote in the first post.. I like it because it's quite amusing. Basically he describes why very large wheels are actually a very bad idea. In the process he pokes some fun at the 'bling-bling' types going for very large wheels. I love the sense of humor.. Reminds me of Dave and Julie from ORR.

My impression is that anything above 17" isn't really a very good idea unless you're only after apearance. If you're after performance 16 or 17" seems to be the sweet spot.

I have 245/45/17 that about 26 high and 10 wide. So I want to know what a xxx/xx/18 which still equals 26 high by 10 wide ?

ok the 245x45x17 is a 25.68x9.65x17 its a tall skinny tire kinda sorta not really just skinny. i would rather here you say you want a tad bit wider expecially for a mustang they are always horrible on traction but oh well let me gander and so some number crunching give me like 5 min

Ok here we go a 265/35ZR18 is a 25.3x10.7x18 that will give you damn near the same hight but be wider for better traction now you might not like it that wide sooo let see something else too

here we go 245/40ZR18 is a 25.7x9.8x18 that looks to be the closest to the 245x45x17

I got it. i think i want to go with a 285/35/18 at least in the rear in the rear, which is about a 26x11.25x18 which keeps the over all height the same but gives me a little bit more width. I don't about the front a 245/40/18 would be the same height in the front but not as wide.

I am also thinking about getting a set of mickey tompson ET slicks and put them on my stock wheels for when i go to the track.

Edit: dam Zack we must have been typing at the same time.
