beadlocks for street use
 

so ive been looking at gettin me a set of beadlocks for the truck and getting rid of the steelies.. however i would sell the steelies and only have the locked rims.. im pretty sure they are illegal for street use!?? not sure why though! just wondering if you guys think a police officer would notice, or care?

what are your guys thoughts about running locks on the streets for a DD

they're illegal because most people neglect to check the lug nuts, never mind all 148? beadlock bolts.

on a normal rim the bead of the tire sits on a "safety lip(?)" so it wont slip off, or leak air..

where as bead locks for the most part just sandwich the tire between 2 steel rings.. the only thing keeping the tire on are the bolts which tend to come loose, bead locks also like to leak so you gotta check the pressure..

there are one, if not more by now, DOT approved bead locks..

to answer your question no, most cops won't notice.


They can be a PITA to balance, i would recommend using airsoft BBs or buying those dynabeads.

yah. but how much do those DOT approved beadlocks cost!!! and what makes them DOT approved anyway??

i found a guy selling a set of 4 DIY beadlocks with bfg KMs for 300 bucks..

and for a while Centerline were the only people who had one..

$300? do it! DIY Kits are ~$250 alone. most cops wont notice. And if one does, big whoop just tell him you didn't know and you'll probably get off with it or just get a fix it ticket so keep your old wheels around.


Just make sure you check the bolts occasionally, If it leaks just pull the ring and smear some silicone between the tire and rings then tighten them back down.

i'm pretty sure that hutchinson was the first street legal beadlock...they made the original hummer wheels, or copied the design...

they are DOT approved because they were designed, engineered and approved as a beadlock wheel, not something jo-blow welded up in his garage.

they use a two piece wheel with an O-ring to sandwich the tire beads with a rubber insert to secure the tire to the wheel.

i highly doubt any cop would notice genuine beadlocks, not with the amount of "faux" beadlocks on every yuppies truck...

are beadlocks safe on the street? i wouldn't hesitate to run them... but i probably wouldn't drive on them every day either...

Carl, if you're taking your truck to Corvallis like you said... DO NOT GET THEM. I'm not kidding, I get pulled over 2-3 times a month. Just to stop and check how what's illegal on my truck. Which is the reason for the lil baby mud flaps, and front plate I rock down there. You do not want to be noticed or known by cops in a college town. Trust me.

On my toyota and my ranger, everytime I got pulled over, they did not mention my beadlocks. THEY DON'T CARE. There are way too many simulation beadlocks out there. Hell, the obvious/real ones they don't care about at all. Just don't have 8-10" of tire sticking outside your fenders, or you MIGHT get pulled over. I have only gotten pulled over once in corvallis. That was for no mudflaps or fenderflares. They never pulled me over in corvallis with my yota. Just my .02

Well that's just you Cory. I honestly can't count how many time I've been pulled over in corvallis, and once I was checked for flares and flaps.

It's your chance, take it if you want to, but don't come on the forums and ***** about it if you do, cuz i've warned you.
