2000 Spare Tire Key Question.

My dad just picked up a clean 2000 Ranger 4x4. It has all owner manuals and seems to have been well cared for. It is missing the spare tire key. Are they universal ? If not how do we go about getting a key ? Thanks !!!!

What do you mean by a spare tire key?

The key that unlocks access to the spare tire crank. It's a long key.

They are on Ebay from time to time. Keep an eye out there for one. They should be universal between trucks. Not sure about what else they fit. As for getting a key for it, a locksmith might be able to pick it, if he's willing to play in such a small area.

Thanks !! I found some on E-Bay, but they are asking for a number ? I'll contact the seller and go from there.

I always wanted one for mine. It never happened and my spare is the stock one. I'm sure it's bad by now. I've also been lucky that my cable is still holding it up.

Yeah our 2000 had the lock standard but my 03 didn't have one. Not that the spare tire/rim is all that valuable anyway.

I found one of the keys in a 2000 at the junkyard, but I never thought to grab the lock from the bed. I don't even think I knew what the key was for, just thought it was cool.

Mine doesn't have the spare tire lock either. What is involved in adding it? Is it as simple as it removes to gain access to the opening?

At the most, parts 3 and 4 in the diagram you posted. Part # 3 may or may not be needed. Most Rangers already have the black piece there, but I'm not sure if it differs between trucks with and without the spare tire lock.

they are the same from 2000 to 2003 at least my dads 00 lock fit my 03. So id say just the lock and the key is all you need.
