Best Tire for 15" Rims?
 

I am in the process of picking up a 1996 Ranger 2wd, manual that I bought off of ebay the other day. It will need new tires fairly soon.

It has 15" rims but I don't know what size tire it has on it. Doing a search I found out that the factory tires are the 195/75/R14.

If I use a tire calculator to give the same speedometer reading (from a 14" to a 15" rim) then it works out to be a 205/60/R15.

1) Does this look correct?

2) If so I will be using the truck mostly on paved roads so I am interested in most comfortable ride possible. What brand of tire is recommended in this size range?

it probably has 225/70/15 on it which is the stock xlt size tires...

I looked at the tire calculator and a 225/70/R15 shows that I would be going 5mph faster than my speedometer is showing (based on a OEM of a 14" rim).

Should this be a concern?

I have always found Michelin tires to give the best ride. They have some styles that the sidewalls are so soft that they look underinflated , when they aren't. I wouldn't recommend them for offroading or on a construction site where you could pick up a lot of nails. If those things don't concern you you might go into a tire store that sells many brands and squeeze some sidewalls, find a cushy one,with tread design you like, in the price / warrantee range to fit your budget. Also running the widest recommended tire for your rim can provide more cushion. I have wished for cushy tires before , when I slipped a disc in my back and this is how I would choose. Just my$.02, bob Ps., you'll want some good shocks too. Maybe someone can recommend them.

Your speedometer probably reads a little low with stock tires,( I've never seen one that didn't) so you would probably be doing about 3 mph over. I wouldn't be concerned , except in school zones. If the speed traps where you live are that bad; I'd drive 5 mph under all the time anyway.

If your staying on pavement, I would suggest an all season radial ( car ) type of tire.
