chrome in winter

looking to get cragar soft 8s in chrome. I was just wondering if anybody knows how they will do in the winter with a lot of sand, salt, etc. will they start peeling?

Fx4wannabe01 01-02-2009 02:06 PM

little bits of surface rust is sure to happen...within 3 years in an environment w/o salt, there were little bits of rust that were unremovable on my old set of wheels.

they will more likely pucker with rust spots, I got a set for christmas but in poweder coated black, havent put them on yet

jtslmn720 01-02-2009 02:06 PM

cragars are steel so they will start to rust once the steel is exposed they will start to bubble

Fx4wannabe01 01-02-2009 02:12 PM

i will say....i've had multiple sets of black painted steel wheels...and never have i encountered rust.

99offroadrngr 01-02-2009 02:24 PM

so you guys think i should just go with the black ones then? every time i wash the truck i get home and the rims are already dirty from salt and crap again.. so i think the chrome will get eaten up
5x4.5 pattern right

Fx4wannabe01 01-02-2009 02:26 PM

5x4.5....but get what you want...salt is a chrome steel wheel killer. just putting that out there.

99offroadrngr 01-02-2009 02:35 PM

yeah i wanted the chrome but i want something i can run year round without worrying about the chrome flaking off. ill go with black so i don't have to worry about it. also save myself some money cuz they are 40 a wheel instead of 60 lol

Ford04Ranger4.0 01-02-2009 03:25 PM

the black wont flake there powdercoated not painted

crazymikey 01-02-2009 03:46 PM

Go with black or satin finish as they are powdercoated and will not attract rust like the chromed steel will.

That's why everyone switches their alloys and chromes for black steelies in the winter,so that they don't rust and pit.

Plus,I like black wheels.

i really don't want to start another thread so....
should i run a 15x10 or 15x8 wheel with the 33x12.5? i want it to stick out a bit and i don't want it to rub with a 3"bl and shackles.....

jtslmn720 01-02-2009 10:11 PM

best bet is the 15x10's

Trigger01 01-02-2009 10:14 PM

15x10's look way better than 8's with that size tire.

FX2.3 01-02-2009 10:56 PM

My black ones rusted without the salt.

Any place where it lost any paint it would rust. Wheel weights, lug nuts, center cap, etc..

So I bought alloys.

Ford04Ranger4.0 01-02-2009 11:06 PM

I have 16X7

99offroadrngr 01-02-2009 11:08 PM

the 15x10s wont rub with that tire and BL or will it? i don't mind the rub at full crank of the wheel but i don't want to trim my valence....
....only going to run an A/T not M/T if that makes any difference
