new tires 245/75-16 or maybe something new...

OK, it's new tire time, I 've had Mile Marker Trail King on them , I ran them slightly increased psi, and the center's wearing out. Anyway, just looking for suggestions. I've been on Tirerack.com and found tires from $322 to $600+. They all have pretty good reviews. Here's the link for Tire Rack's surveys for on/off road tires. http://www.tirerack.com/tires/survey....jsp?type=ORAT Even the Kumho's at $322 are in the top ten. Ahh, decisions, decisions...

I do want a tire that is more off road than on road as this will be my primary winter/hunting truck this year. I have a 91 Explorer with a set of Mile Marker snow kings that have been awesome, but they are a discontinued tire.

My stepson suggests a 15"steel rim with 31x10.5 tires. He said he thinks it's about the same circumfrence and height of stock, but could get better tires for less money, even allowing for the rims. I could then use the aluminum rims with a better highway tire.

Any and all suggestions welcome, thanks in advance.

I have the General Grabber AT2's and have no complaints. By far the best AT tire I've ever had. The majority will say BFG's but my Grabbers have out performed the BFG's I had before in every category.

Edit: I only paid $98 a tire for the Grabbers. BFG's were $127. My Grabbers also came with a 50k mile warranty.

Its all in how much you drive #1, #2 how aggressive do you want to go and most importantly how much you want to spend...

BFG All Terrains are big money, and will wear like iron, or you can get a nice highway tire too..I just got the Cooper STT's and i love those so far...

tires again

OK, first, I meant MultiMile tires, and not Mile makers or whatever I said before. When I go off road, I'm still on dirt roads, forest service roads, etc. I don't go cross country on unmarked trails. AT or MT I presume is all terrain or mud terrain. Probably the AT's. Most of my driving is on hard road, probably 75/25. Also need them to be great in snow/ice. Here in Colorado, I live at 8500 feet and I've seen snow in Sep till June. Heck we had a storm come through last Oct and left 18" of snow. I've also only seen one ice storm in 7 years out here.

Price is always an issue, but the $600 range isn't too far fetched. Current size is fine with me, unless I hear good reasons to change. My step son's idea of steel rims and off road tires is a good one. I'd still have to buy new summer tires soon, they'd be more hiway but some dirt roads. This gives me time to find steel rims and snow/mud tires.

Summer tires aren't a problem, I have several I like. It's the aggressive tire I'm looking for opinions on. I'm still liking the Wrangler Silent Armor or the Kumho's. Guess I'll try and see them in person and then decide.
