Looking to move up to 15s and a common size tire
I know this is common question but the tire chart in the sticky is dead...
The tires on my truck only have a year or so left and the guys at my tire shops are telling me that it will be very hard to find a decent tire for my 14" rims as the companies are quickly discontinuing the size... I'd like to move up to 15s or 16s from a Ranger or Explorer as the rims are super cheap at junkyard or on FB Marketplace and Craigslist. Current size is 215 70 14 on a stock suspension 96 Ranger long bed 2WD... What year Ranger/explore and what sizes should I be looking for? |
You have a 26" diameter tire with a 215/70R14
To keep speedometer working correctly you need another 26" diameter tire, you can go to 15" or 16" rims and stay at 26" diameter, unless you want taller tires, up to you Any year Ranger or Explorer wheels are fine to use on a 2WD Some 2WD rims won't fit some 4WDs because center hole is too small for locking front hubs At the bottom of this article are pictures of Ranger and Explorer rims by year: https://therangerstation.com/tech_li..._fitment.shtml There is also a list of other vehicles wheel that will fit your Ranger And there are also Mustang wheels, seen here: https://therangerstation.com/tech_li...r_ranger.shtml If you go here: https://tiresize.com/tiresizes/215-70R14.htm It has your current tire data, REVS/MILE is what your Speedometer is set for Generally speedometers are off by +/- 3% from the factory, so close is good enough, 25.7" to 26.3" diameter should be fine Click on Alternate Sizes, and it will list tires by size and diameter so you can see what available |
Thanks Ron but did I read somewhere that in order to keep the speedometer correct all I have to do is change the gear to the one from the wheel's donor vehicle?
Maybe a 2WD Explorer? I see a couple sites listing the 95 and 96 Explorer 4.0 having the same transmission as mine but also 15 inch tires. |
You didn't mention the year of the Ranger
1983 to 1997 Rangers used "speed gears" that could be changed fairly easily for changes in tire size, or rear axle ratio changes. 1998 and up were full electronic so you need to reprogram either the GEM or the PCM to correct speed conversion for tire size |

Then yes, 1996 still has the Driven Gear on the transmissions tail shaft, it can be changed to correct speedometer for tire size

This post was helpful, thanks. I have a similar but slightly different question as I'm also looking to move up a couple inches in tire size. Thought I'd add to this post instead of creating my own.
I have a '98 2.5L XL 2WD and currently have the 14x5.5J steel wheels and 205/75R14s for a 26.1" tire diameter (actually have 225/70R14s on the back due to limited availability). As noted, the 14 inch tires are relatively expensive and almost impossible to come by used. I have a local tire shop that sells/mounts good used tires for ~$30 and I'd like to have that as an option. So after my current tires wear down, I'd like to salvage a set of 5 matching 15x7 wheels from the JY and be able to pick up 5 good used tires to match them. I'd like to retain some sidewall height and improve my truck's appearance a little so I'm thinking up bumping up to a 28-29" tire. I can adjust the speedo in the GEM to account for the change. I know that stock '98 splash 4WD Rangers came with 235/75R15s and that these tires were also on a number of other trucks/SUVs. Anyone with knowledge of tire availability have any recommendations? If you were going to get a 28-29" tire for your Ranger, what would you recommend? TIA |
