OK I think I found my tire.... finally? maybe?

I went out shopping this morning. stopped at Dunn first, and talked to the guy (who also owned a 94 ranger) and he suggested the tires he has, but, they looked more like go cart tires to me. so i asked if they had anything comparable to the bfg at ko's and he said he knows of a tire, that he can order but none in the store, so he says these phantom tires at General Grabber AW2 and quoted me a price of $121 for 245/75/16 he also went on to say, that the 265's would fit, now see im not sure, alot of your fols say they will fit, however talking to numerous people the past few days, some say they will fit, others say not a chance. so, i figured id go in the middle, for the 255 size.

anyways, i stopped at good year, and the old dued behind the counter gave me the impression that any "off road" tire is no good. I looked at the wrangler silent armor tires, they looked better online in my opinion. and their out of my price ranger, and yes redneckstone, im out of work, doctors orders till further notice, moeny is a WEE bit tight. so, then i went to sears, they have the bfgs for $150, in the 245 range, so i wrote that down, and looked at a couple other tires in their limited selection, personally i thought they were a bit pricey myself.

I looked at my tires in the store, (the old dude at good year recommended them) they look better in the store than they do on my truck... figure that one out... anyways he tried to push those pretty hard, saying how great they are, a simple "i have em they suck" ended that. heh...

So, i came home with all my notes, and stuff and hit up google and tire rack, tire rack so far as been a real asset for comparing tires, they offer good pics of the tires and stuff, anyways, i found the tires the dude at dunlop suggested (the ranger guy, who agreed that the rts tires suck, in fact there was ANOTHER ranger guy there getting new tires (bfgs) with an 00 and also concurred that the rts tires suck heh, kinda like a mini ranger meet, ya im rambling)

ok, so heres the tire, and it looks very similar to the at ko's and about $100 cheaper per tire:

I havent seen them in person yet, but they have good reviews and their right in my price range (yes zach im a cheap sob) so, ya, input is welcomed.

i see those all the time but i have never heard anything good or bad about them... i know that general tires are pretty good but nothing of that style

FMD 08-20-2006 12:10 PM

well how do they look in person?

A friend of mine had a set of General Grabber MT's and he is now running BFG AT's. Those grabbers of his wore like they were maed of play-dough.......I'd say stick with something along the lines of a BFG or Bridgestone AT

bwester04 08-20-2006 12:27 PM

^x2, i've had General Grabber AT's on my truck before my last set of tires.. they sucked a$$ performance wise, wear was horrible (only lasted about 30k and they were toast), and the wet traction, wow that was a joke.. the firestones fixed all of that, my new Kumho's are doing even better than the firestones in the performance sector, we'll see about treadwear in the future.. Good luck with your decision though!

unless you desperatly need tires in general, now is not the time to be spending money like that.

i have seen them a few times there a wanna be BFG a/t i wouldnt put them on the same level as them but if you cant afford them i would get them for now. i would reather see you even get the Procomp A/T over that tire(i know scary isnt it...)

ok but about the guy at the tire store...

RULE #1 DO NOT LISTEN TO THE TIRE STORE GUYS....they have GENERAL nollage about alot of things. i would honist trust them way more with a car tire the trucks 100% you can go to any tire store in my area and give the stats of your truck and ask for 265x75x16 they will swear up and down it wont work but i know 100% with out a doupt in my mind they will... Sara's(rangerchick) truck even has them and beleave she has NEVER touched her T-bars her dad would have a fit and her mom... Zach Beards truck had them now he had his t-bars cranked but thats cause he liked it level not cause it rubbed.

here is saras truck with 265x75x16 Dualer Revo's no T-bar crank at all NO RUBBING AT ALL...

Look at the forced induction page and how many people with 3.0's that jerked off waiting for whipple.. then 3 people bought them? How about those 4 bangin guys with their turbos..

Theres another thread where someone asked why a post *I* made was even taken seriously..

Theres 1 person whom knows what they are talking about for every 20 that DO know what they speak of. Theres 2 people wanking over how something LOOKS compared to its functionallity/purpose.

With tires, theres also a BIG diufference in Enviornmental impact. You, Dave and I are all in areas that recieve snow. Our snow is a LOT different then the snow in WV or Virginia.. Our rain season and amount of rainfall also varies from those more south of us as well. Same with Seattle where it ALWAYS rains ( Pontoon mod anyone? ). All areas would see different results with different types of tires.

Wet traction compared to dry traction.. Tires that grab dry pavement like F1's would be great in Cali or Florida.. try rolling with them in Janurary in the Great Lakes area.. there would be totally different opinion for obvious reasons.

I know Dave, he's from my neck of the woods. I know the driving conditions as do you and the Detroit/MI crew. Tires that might do ' good ' by us would be less then par for somewhere else.

The dilema Dave faces.. What tire, what location, what opinion and ' whom ' he is speaking with having a clue.

*I* personally believe tires and brakes are NO area to slouch on. Those are the MOST important items on our vehicals as they touch the road and stop us. Many others would believe having a million dollar stereo on some 3$ walmart tires would be fine so long as they could hit 160db's in an SPL matchup.. you see things a bit different.

I think this would make a good poll actually.. ' whats the most important part of your truck ' and have a list of items.

ok so i think ima go with the 265/70TR16 which is about 20mm wider than my stock tire, but only a couple mm taller. and its $20 cheaper than the 265/75r16

i was going to go with that size but it is rare compared to a 265/75/16 so it actually would have cost more.

FMD 08-21-2006 10:42 AM

according to tire rack its cheaper by $20 per tire

zabeard 08-21-2006 10:50 AM

but possibly not the local tire shop, that was what tire rack told me as well
