Painting Alcoas?

I was just wondering if anyone on here has tried painting the brushed aluminum Alcoa's. I was wondering how well they would turn out
as I think a different colored rim (Black, Dark Gray) would be a noticeable cheap mod until I get new rims when I have the cash for 33s
and a BL. Please post pics if you have any! Thanks

i have seen some charcoal colored ones, but they would look sick black! do it!

05blackranger 09-16-2009 09:04 AM

Yeah I definitely think it would look good. I really like the look of the DSG Alcoa's on the
newer LII's but like every poor college student I don't have the money to spend haha

They would be sweet I'm sure!

Could you afford to have the wheels sandblasted and powdercoated? I think the finish might look better and be more durable..

05blackranger 09-16-2009 09:16 AM

That's what I am wondering... I would have to check with some places when I have a
break from school. I think if I did them myself and spent a lot of time doing it right I could
get them to look pretty good.

Scuff them up and hit them with some automotive grade paint and clear. If you want them to last dont rattle can it. you can get a cheap detail gun and the paint really wont be that high. all you will need is a quart. Find a one stage paint so no need to clear..

jim i think you should do it!

powerranger262 09-16-2009 11:28 AM

Anyone have an idea of what it might cost to get them chromed?

LOTS OF $$$$

you can sand the clear off and re polish them to a chrome finish. Shoot some clear on them and you will never have to polish again..

Roach2004 09-16-2009 12:36 PM

I think they would look badass black.

You'll never get them to have a chrome finish. The best they could have is a "polished aluminum" which still doesnt look near as good as real chrome.

Ask me how I know.... I bought the cheaper wheels a few years ago, 17" polished aluminum bullit wheels for my lowered Ranger. I had to polish them like every week, I didn't even have to drive the truck and I swear they lost their shine. Chrome is worth it., although chrome plating wheels is super expensive.

Just have the powdercoated black..

jlstang351 09-16-2009 02:04 PM

You can polish aluminum to look damn near like chrome if you know what your doing.

Not quite alcoas, AR Bajas, chrome, and I couldnt stand the cracked chipping chrome so I painted them flat black with automotive spray paint, has lasted 4 months with no damage.

05blackranger 09-16-2009 10:13 PM

Jacob, those turned out great! Did you use any clearcoat at all? From the pics I am guess no?

Nope. I am actually really surprised they have stuck so well. I wouldve probably gone with a semi flat instead of flat. I really wanted to powder coat them but I didnt have the money and was really tired of the peeling chrome so me an my lil bro just took the wheels off, taped them off and I sprayed them really good.

They never look dirty tho and I love the look with the chrome lugs and center caps. Looks custom enough for me.

EricRanger 09-16-2009 10:20 PM

you should do it jim, come back home this weekend and we can get it done. You can run my stockers if you need to.

05blackranger 09-16-2009 10:28 PM

Can't come home this weekend, though I miss my truck haha. Definitely high on my list of possible mods.

silverbullet32 09-17-2009 07:31 AM

yeah i would go with a semi-gloss. flat looks ok, but semi has a little more pop to it
