Question about tires for this winter...
 

Well I live in michigan and my ranger is only 2wd. If I drive carefully it should be better in the snow than my SVT Focus. However, if you ever own an svt focus you don't drive carefully lol. So I'm wonder what would be better in the snow and overall..

Should I get off road tires and leave them on all the time, or just get winter tires for the winter. I'm not too worried about traction in the rain as long as its not terrible, but I want traction in the snow and dry traction isn't a factor either since if i floor from a stop I can't spin the stock conti-tracs so dry shouldn't be a problem. I'd prefer to get the off road (all terrain, not necesarily Max traction swampers lol) if they will be good in the snow so that I can keep them year round. Price isn't an issue.

winter tires, winter duelers are awesome, i only went into 4WD a few times,

Id say go with a All Terrain tire and run it year round.

BFG AT should work great for you...

get 4 snow tires for the Focus and leave the 2WD truck behind

And to whoever posted about the focus, my beloved SVT is gone, I traded it in, so its not an option in the snow, in the mud, or at the track :frown:

So still a toss up between winter tires and off road i guess. I think the off road is more economical since I can use them year round. Funny thing is the truck and tires only has 629 miles on them lol. But the conti-tracs suck. So did the conti-sport-contacts on my svt.

The problem with comparing tires on tirerack is that everyone reviewing the off road tires has 4wd lol. So alot of their opinion comes from having that extra traction. I couldn't find BFG A/T in my size 235/70/16. How much larger sidewall can I have before it starts to really effect my speedometer? Any other recommendations on All terrain brands? I think if I do go winter I'd probably go with blizzaks or something around 90-100 bucks a tire, since I wouldn't be using them all the time.

they do wonders for winter traction.

if you have 15" rims get 31x10.5x15 or if you want a nicer size get 32x11.5x15.

now if you have 16" rims get 265x75x16

they do nice in the mud too...... but they arnt a MT..

correct there not but with our snow up here the wonderful I couldnt beleave the difference between my cooper and these they where like night and day

From my experince, running a 2WD pickup in the snow w/ just all-season radials is doable, as long as you have plenty of tread and don't expect much. Slow way the hell down and learn how to countersteer real well. Also pack a shovel and some sand in the bed. The sand is there for weight but can also be used for traction on ice in a pinch. And once you get past maybe 50% of the tread life, it'll be a nightmare. I ran a set of Firestone Wilderness HTs (cheapo all-seasons) bald on my '99 XL Sport 2WD. It sucked.

Now I've got a set of premium AT's (BFG AT's) on my new truck. I have to say the tires are excellent in the snow. So much so that I only really find myself needing 4WD in rare situations. I'd highly recommend a set. An option is to slap them on a set of cheap steel wheels and run them only in the winter. Doing this you should be able to get several winters out of a set and chew up some less expensive all-season rubber in the summer.

I don't have any direct experience, but from everything I've heard, I would avoid running a dedicated off-road tire (ie an MT) tire in the snow. The AT would be a far better choice..

Alright zach, I'll go with the BFG A/T you posted, didn't know that width would fit my wheels. Are you in class now? I am lol, I'm not paying attention the instructor, but I have a 100 percent in the class so its no big deal haha.

naw I am at home i got class at 1pm thought. yes the width will fit perfit with your stock 16x7 wheels the tires are acully a 32x10.5x16 coverted and slight rounding. your speedo will be like 3mph slower then it is now nothing drastic. you can put a 10" wide tire on a 7" rim perfect with no problem also there will be no rubbing with these tires so dont worry about that eather.

i just had to call cosco for these just the other day they have then for like $630 or something go there get them to write down the price(you dont have to be a member just to walk in and have them price them) and go to discount tire or belle tire and they will price match it. because they are more $ there. and belle and discount will mount these tires cosco will not because its a larger size then stock they got sued so they wont do it OR there is way around it you can take the rims off the truck and take them up to cosco and dont tell them what its going on and they will mount them thats the trick

Alright cool, should I get it off tire rack or does discount tire sell them? I'm getting a 500 dollar check in the mail within the next 2 weeks so thats going to pay for most of em.

just thought of something if you want to see these tires just take a look at my truck in the parking lot i have the same size i told you to get. now dont be alarmed by how stuffed they are on mine your truck is slight taller then mine and also i have a wider backspacing wheel then your stockers. but also look at I have an easy 23000 miles on them and they still look damn new these will last you an easy 50000+

alright will do. I'll set aside the cash, and put the exhaust on the back burner. I did your tires and your exhaust and I liked both lol. The conti-tracs just don't look truck enough, so even if know wasn't a factor I'd want new tires. I'll probably do the exhaust in january, but I need tint like asap lol.

Yea thats where I'm going. Thats where I had my 98 contour and 02 svt focus done. I might get the LED dome light too since its only 8 bucks. Should be about 120 bucks for everything but the windshield, considering how small the back windows are.
