I am in need of some new tires, i am trying to keep close to stock size 225/70/15. I recently got some new 16" exploder wheels so my new tires will have to be 16" though.

I havent decided if i want to go 225/60/16 or 215/70/16, but my goal is MPGs so i am leaning towards the narrower tire. Any advice opinions on which way to go here?

For tires i am looking at Michelin LTX M/S because they seem to have good reviews and i might be able to get a deal on a pair. Has anybody used those before or heard anything good or bad about them?

 

Watch the load range on the 16" tires...

If possible stick to 15".

 

any particular reason to avoid 16" tires, i don't really follow? load range could be an issue on any tire no matter the wheel size

 

Are you trying to keep to about the same overall tire size?? IE width and height? If so, a 225/60R16 is about an inch smaller. Same with 215/70R16.

I'd say go with the 225/60's. I like a wider tread patch touching the road. MPG gains/losses are so very minute on your application, that it won't make much if any difference at all. The differences in sizes between stock and what you're looking at going to can also be seen between new and bald tires. So small, it'll be barely noticeable.

I've become quite the fan of Cooper tires on my work trucks. Decent prices, decent available sizes, and great performance for what they are. I'm talking of the AT3 tire we put on our service trucks.




BTW....noticed you're in Portland. I'm just on the east outskirts of the metro area. Just east of Gresham.


16" is also a LT (light truck) tire....aka 3/4 to 1 ton tire. If a LT tire and size is chosen, just watch for the load rating. Typically, ranger's have a C range rated tires. 3/4 or 1 ton's have a E or F. Higher the letter, higher the rating = stiffer the ride. BUT, longer the life in most cases.

Won't make much of a difference with your such a small size of tire. The rating issues start showing their faces once you get to the 265/70R16 range. Judging by the sizes you're looking at, you're probably getting a passenger car tire size and ratings. Thus making the rating warnings absolutely useless for you. lol.

 

The only problem is and from what I can see the tire he is looking at is load rated “D” and “E”.
I believe it has to do with the type/load range rather than the size but.

So, as I said FWIW, “Watch the load rating keep it in the “C” range/108 rated.
