How often to change fuel filter?

How often should the fuel filter be replaced? I believe the one that is currently on my truck is the original or hasn't been changed in the past 5 or 6 years as I know my brother wouldn't take it to the dealer for maintenance and oil change places don't use motorcraft parts.

I checked my owners manual, and it says "see your dealer or a qualified service technician."
Don't know why they don't just put it in the manual. Think it's about 50-60K.
No need to change it more often than factory recommendation. Those filters are expensive.

Depending on the type of gas normally used. 15-20k is what I have always been told.

I got the tool for about $5 and it took about 5 minutes with me not knowing what I was doing. Pull the relay for the fuel pump, try to start the truck for a few seconds to take away the fuel pressure. Then craw under the truck, use the tool to pop off the fuel lines from the filter. Pull the filter off and put in a bucket since its full of fuel. Put the new one in the holder and push the lines back on. Put the relay back in, and done. It's quite easy.

Have you ever found a Factory fuel line tool installed near the fuel filter? I was under a Ford Windstar one day and noticed an odd piece of plastic molded into a plastic bracket near the fuel filter. With a few twists it broke loose and I discovered that it was a fuel filter tool molded in from the assembly line - kind of cheapy looking, but it still works okay.

And I'd say between 15-25k for changing the filter.

yo releive the fuel pressure you can just push the shrader valve on the fuel rail. i've never releived the pressure before doing mine. gas is going to come out wether you bleed the pressure off or not.

But if you've been doing some high rpm driving right before you turn it off the pressure might be quite high.

I have a feeling if I change my fuel filter, it will significantly increase my MPGs, because my filter is 7 years and 250 000 miles old...
