Correct Oil?

lol i know next time im gonna get all amsoil products for the truck. i just couldnt afford everything right now. Whats is the difference in 5w-20 and 5w-30? ok i found out that it is oil viscosity meaning 5 is the cold temp and 30 is the operating temp

I switched my 3.0 over to 5w30 (ASL 25,000/1 year oil from Amsoil...I keep it in there for 6-7 months) and have seen no evidence to make me switch back to 5w20 (Bad gas mileage etc..). 5w30 100% full synthetic in Amsoil or Mobil 1 is fine and will protect better then a 5w20.
If you have/need to run 5w20 and want a full synthetic, go with Mobil 1's 5w20 full synthetic. The XL-7500 line from Amsoil is a glorified semi-synthetic and not worth the price tag IMO. For less then a dollar more I would get their 5w30 full synthetic or for the same price, get the Mobil 1.
Ford has been using 5w30 in the 3.0 since it came out and recently (2001 I believe) switched to 5w20 for CAFE reason. They did the same thing with the 4.6L v8s...from 5w30 to 5w20. .06% increase in gas mileage is something we will never see when we go to the gas pump but since they produce a ton of cars, it pays off for them big time.
FYI: Most people run 10w30 in the summer if they are in places with extreme heat.

I used to use the XL-7500 until last Jan. I had no problems with the XL-7500 line but for 1 dollar more, you can get their 100% synthetic 5w30 and it will be a real synthetic. I change it every 6-7 months regardless of when they say to change it.
Notice how on Amsoil's 100% synthetic oil...it says 100% synthetic on there...on their pseudo synthetic, it just says "synthetic".
I really think it should be in the $3 range but maybe they sell it at that price because Amsoil backs up all their products? IE: Incase anything happens to your vehicle because of their product, they will take care of it for you...like an insurnace policy. No other oil company does that (That I know of).

The XL-7500 only stays in for 7500 miles. and it still has a higher total base number than Mobil 1. Its ideal for those who "dont trust oil staying in their engine for a year" even so, you could use the ASL 25,000 mile oil and change it as often as you like, its a few cents more than Mobil 1 and outperforms it in many tests, so its better for your engine. Sure Mobil 1 is just fine. Then again so is that 79c oil thats on sale at AutoZone. Why dont you use the 79c oil? answer that question and then ask why wouldnt you use Amsoil over Mobil 1??

Well I wouldn't use that 79c oil because it's crap IMO. Mobil 1 and Amsoil have been around a long time and have proven that they are the best (At least in my book). You can't compare the 79c oil to 100% synthetic Amsoil/Mobil 1. You can't even compare the semi-synthetic Motorcraft to that 79c lube.
Most people will go for the Mobil 1 because it's a lot easier to buy and everywhere you turn, you see a sign for it or an advertisement. Also benz, bmw, etc etc all use M1 from the factory, that must mean something. With Amsoil you either have to know a dealer or buy it on-line, wait for it to get shipped and pay taxes/shipping charges. With M1 you just go down to your nearest walmart and pick up a gallon jug for 17 bucks. (17/4=4.25 per quart).
The test show that Amsoil is better but in my book, it’s such a miniscule figure that it doesn’t matter for all practical purposes.
Now according to what Amsoil has on their site…
NOACK Volatility: Mobil 1: 9.17%. Amsoil: 4.90% Difference of 4.27%
Four Ball Wear Test: Mobil 1: 0.60. Amsoil 0.40 Difference of 0.20.
Flash/Fire Point: Amsoil: 471/446 Degrees F. Mobil 1: 455/435 Degrees F. Difference of 16/11 Degrees F. Flash/Fire point respectively.
Pour Point: Amsoil: -60 Degrees F. Mobil 1: -54 Degrees F. Difference of 6 Degrees F.
TBN: Amsoil: 12.35 Mobil 1: 8.45. Difference of 3.9.
Again, the difference is so miniscule that it doesn’t mean ANYTHING IMO. So just because Amsoil can handle -6 degrees more then Mobil in the pour point or that Amsoil can handle 16 degrees more then Mobil 1 in their flash point somehow means it's better for my engine? Both are good lubes.
I would like to know what their percent error is for those tests and their standard deviation. Their results are so small that it can be attributed to error.
To answer your question. “Why wouldn’t you use Amsoil over Mobil 1??”.
I will use what ever I can get easier access to with out having to bend over backwards. The bottom line is that both Mobil 1 and Amsoil ARE better then other lubes and WILL protect an engine better then other lubes period.
Amsoil needs to lower their prices on some of their things, especially the XL-7500 line, it's not worth it IMO. It should be in the $3-3.50 range.
FYI: I run Amsoil all around in my Ranger and Mobil 1 all around in the Marquis. Best of both worlds...

on the 4 ball wear youre saying the difference is .20, thats 50% better than mobil 1
AMSOIL may only have 3.9 more tbn, but youre talking 33% more.
And its hard to say 100% synthetic mobil 1, it depends on your definition of synthetic, but AMSOIL is still out of the ballpark with Mobil 1 in that respect.
Yes the 7500 is priced a little high, i believe that as well, but i dont control their prices, i can only assume its so that the consumer will see that the other oil is only a little more and buy that.
and extremepc is just not paying attention, not all AMSOIL is rated to last a year, and when changed more frequently, the viscosity does not go up

Anyone who believes the results of tests that Amsoil itself conducts is naive. Of course the results will favor Amsoil. Do you really think that Amsoil is interested in conducting, and publishing the results of, well-designed and well-conducted tests? They're out to make money, and like most businesses they're willing to make claims that range from dubious to outright false to do so, and base the claims on phony or nonexistent tests. Witness, for example, in the motor vehicle industry, the laughable claims made about the Tornado and Turbonator.

i dont see how hard facts would be considered just a "claim" amsoil is not just saying they are better than the other oils in the test, they are proving it. would mobil 1 deny the numbers in AMSOILs test? i doubt it, theres only so many times you can test it and get the same number.
as a matter of fact amsoil did publish a test result where they were NOT the top scorer for the test, it was beaten marginally by pennzoil synthetic.
If youre going to make a STRONG stand that amsoil is making false claims, back it up. So far all youve got is that the tornado sucks, which is not even remotely relevant to motor oil. There are real world tests that show others are better suited for other applications, but how can you argue with numbers? unless you have different numbers?? please share
im not saying AMSOIL is the best in the world, there are well documented cases where Mobil 1 has outperformed amsoil in certain instances. And amsoil didnt even test other REAL synthetic oils, like Redline or Royal Purple. I wont sit here and claim that amsoil is the best money can buy, but i can say its better than most. Thats all anyone can say about it.

depending on the oil you use, you can go longer intervals. Mobil 1 now has oil that claims to last 15,000 miles. Amsoil has 3 varieties, that last 7500, 25000 or 35000 miles. keep in mind that your ultimate factor will be the oil filter, if you use a cheap filter, it will still have to be changed every 3k miles. a high end filter iw ould trust up to 7500 and amsoil makes one that claims 12,500 miles. Im an amsoil dealer and get it at cost, but i still change my oil about every 7500 miles, as most oils tend to thicken up over time.
