Losing oil, but not burning or dripping...

I've got a '90 Ranger with the 2.9 V6. I bought it with a blown headgasket and had a remanufactured long block dropped in-- same motor, 2.9 V6. After a few adjustments it runs ok, but goes through oil like crazy. I'm well past the "break-in" period (I've put about 12K miles on the new engine), and I'm not leaking or burning it. For the life of me, I can't figure it out.

Every 400 - 1,000 miles or so I am adding a quart, and again, it's not leaking and it's not going out the pipes. Any ideas-- I'm stumped.

That's not too incredibly bad. Hell when I worked for GM they had a disclaimer saying if your engine was off of warranty 1 qt. every 600 miles was acceptable.
