Built up a 4.0? Get in here.
I am ready to pull my 99 4.0 out and start a freshening. Truck is going back to daily driver and I will use it to pull my car trailer when I take my B2 off roading.
I am looking for some input from anyone who has done port work, cam swaps, tuners, headers,etc.... I want to know what worked, what was a waist,gains for each mod or just anything you can give me before I start spending money on parts.
My buddy has an engine shop and I was going to give the heads to him for a mild port job,new seals,new springs and a mill job to make em true and bump the compression a tad.
If there is a decent cam out there that will pick up some power below 4000rpm I wanna know.
Are headers worth the money on a 4.0?

I found a Comp Cam that is listed as a OEM replacement for more towing power below 4800rpm. Sounds like a winner.

I just like to say 302 swap whenever someone asks about more power since I want a 302 . All of the HD TV's are SAS'd and 302'd, thats what makes them so good.

Depends on what you want. I always say go big or go home, well usually, but you have to figure out what you want. If you want to keep the V6 so you don;t have to fool with wiring and stuff, then Id stroke the 4.0, cam, headers, intakes, and head work. It'll cost a lot, but you will still have the V6 and no wiring, and it should put you right at or a tad above a stock 5.0. Or there's the 5.0 swap... still a lot of money, but you will end up with more low end torque than any 4.0, and damn, you just can't beat that sound. The swap isnt too bad at all. Just takes some looking at a few manuals for the slight wiring differences. Tell us more about what you want and about what kind of work you are comfortable with doing.

What is the stroke on the older 4.0L? The ohc ones have a fairly short stroke. Which is the opposite of what you want for a towing vehicle.
But.. IMO you have the right mindset. A mild port and blending of the bowls along with a cam would be the best way to do it on a shade tree budget. It'll just move the TQ curve down in rpms.. which is perfect for what your trying to accomplish.
IMO.. headers for towing would not be worth it. Just port match the stock iron ones and remove any obvious bumps or sharp corners.
btw, I have SCT pro racer tuning software and tune my own ranger. If you ever get into it at that level let me know.

As piston speed goes up.. so does rod bearing and piston skirt loading. As long as everything is square and you don't over rev it.. it would be fine. Only when you get into 6000+ rpms do you really start to have to worry about balancing and bearing clearances vs oil pressure & viscosity.
I've got a 5.4L that the bottom end is good for 7500. And it took a lot of details (aka money) to do it.

OK guys first off lets remember I said its going to be my daily driver.....all talk of 302 swaps stop here. Not doing it, dont want it.
Strokers are out also because of cost. As I said in the first post this is just a FRESHENING of my stock motor. I will get all machine work and porting done for pennies since my good friend has his own engine shop and he owes me a big favor for all the bussiness I have sent him lately.
I am lookin at fresh hone,rings,bearings,pumps,cam swap,head porting,intake porting and possibly a tune.Im just lookin to pick up some power down low to help with mileage and towing power.
I wanted to hear from anyone who has done a 4.0 with ported heads,tuner or bigger cam to see what kind of difference it made.

Your mazda b4000 4x4 weighs about 4000 pounds and can complete a 1/4 mile in about 15.5 seconds. That means that you've got about 212.30 HP at the wheels, and about 275.99 HP at the flywheel.
