When your talking about mpg cold air intakes won't do anything for you. An aftercat exaust usually won't help much. But it will a little.
When it comes to low throttle efficiency you gotta do two things. Reduce pumping losses and reduce rpms.
Pumping losses really are caused by the throttle plate. You gotta open it further. And the only way to do that w/o increasing fuel usage is with the tune. (leaning it out and adding egr)
Lower rpms are the most effective thing you can do. It's even more effective than taking off like a grandma (aka jack rabbit starts).
I'm sitting right at 20.5mpg avg now. And I usually do about one good 0-60mph blast a day too.
Driving technique is really the key. If your on the brakes your wasting gas. And if you over 2000rpms (except on the freeway) your wasting gas.

I only get 11.7 mpg and I've done everything I can think of to try and get that up. I got a K&N intake Gibson extreme dual exhaust Bosch O2 sensors all around new spark plugs spark plug wires I use the castrol gtx for engines with 75,000 and over and I use seafoam every 3000 miles. I do run 31x10.50 tires but those come stock on the newer fx4 rangers. I got the 3.73 gears and I,m getting ready to change the fluid. I might just get the worst mpg for a 4.0 on r-f

With as many miles as you have on it.. you just might have a calipar that not releasing.

When I was up in WY at 7200 ft, my record low was about 10.5 mpg. Turns out my MAF sensor was damaged (pesky mud hole), it was throwing codes about every 2-3 days, got a rebuilt one for $100 and a little careful driving, I'm averaging between 17-18 mixed city/ highway. I'm also down around 1000 ft now, but that doesn't seem to effect gas mileage as much as it does acceleration. I have the 4.0 ohv with 3.73s, but it seems like the sohc 4.0s get 3-4 mpg better than us, and have more hp.
What about the 5.0 guys, what kind of mileage do they see?

If you didn't, I wold expect the TACH to speedometer readings to stay
they same, with a speedometer error with the larger tires.
#46
The speedometer will be off.
#47
I agree that the TACH will be accurate, and if the speedometer hasn't
been calibrated, the TACH reading to speedometer reading should be the
same as the smaller tires.

Thanks for the concern Bob. But I'm way ahead of ya.
I've not only adjusted the tune.. I had the tune written before I even got the tires.
I do wish however that I could make the speedo read what the PCM says.
There's a bone fer ya Bob. How can I correct that?
I suspect it can only be done via the guage cluster?

One way to try and calibrate your speedometer in the instrument cluster is rotating the needle slightly on the shaft of the speedometer. If the speedometer is reading slow, you will want to rotate the needle clockwise (driver's view of the speedometer), if it's reading fast, you will want to rotate the needle counter-clockwise. I'm not
familiar with the Ranger speedometer , to know if you can hold the shaft stationary, while rotating the needle very slightly.
One concern I have, however Rich, is the accuracy of your tuner in displaying information.......a recent example being the timing information.
Do you have a GPS you can compare your speedometer and tuner (PCM)speed against?
