Ok, so I recently did an oil change and replaced the filter at a buddies house. When I put the filter on he asked if I put oil in it first, I was like wtf? I know you put a bit of oil around the gasket before you put it on, but he was trying to tell me to pour oil into the filter first before I screwed it on. That's the first I've ever heard of that. Anyone ever do that?

 

NOPE. just around the ring for me. it'll fill up with oil as soon as you add new oil

depends on how the filter mounts and how big it is.

 

If You can put oil in it and put it on without spilling it, do it. The engine runs dry until it fills that filter, Its no big deal if you don't, But why not?

 

Its not a must but if you don't it puts an air bubble in your lines witch means starting dry as mentioned before. Just saves some where and tear on your engine! Enough to really make a difference to you IDK enough to make a difference to me Yes!

 

Yeah I can't fill mine up because I have to angle it to get it on for my 3.0

its really only needed on diesel engines. I have never filled a oil filter on a Gas job before, but on diesels i fill the filter every time. more harm done to a diesel engine running dry. Gas job no harm will be done unless you forget to put the oil in the engine.

 

Probably not, But it sure doesn't hurt to do it either.

i work at the local jiffy lube here its only harmful on diesel wont do anything to gas engines for the little bit they run dry

 

its called priming the filter.. always do it... you really dont have to... just always have..

 

i worked at jiffy lube.lol go figure.. and i came to figure out that unless your vehicle takes over 5 qts of oil then you shouldnt put any in, safety reasons, like if any moister got in it somehow. not sure why that is, but yeah. the whole point of turning your vehicle on after an oil change and rev the engine is to make sure oil makes it into the filter with no leaks, if there is no air gap the leak wont show right off the bat... which may ***** you over later on....

 

yeah i hate jiffy lube i want to get on at one of the firestones they have here cause better pay and benefits

 

i quit there after like 2 months cuz it was a joke, every day i covered some idiots A** for not doing something like, oh yeah, PUTTING THE OIL IN THE CAR!!!

 

it sucks when you leave the old gasket on the mounting plate or just leave off a filter.. LOL

 

I've done this for over 20years. There are a few filters out there that have the pressure relief valve at the top and you can't fill them. (4cyl contours for example)

It's just another small thing you can do to help keep the rod bearings live a longer life.

I have always done it to my filters. Anything I change oil on i fill up the filter too.

 

How do you fill a filter when a car has a cartridge filter... I don't fill mine at all.

 

cartridge filters you dont have to worry about priming
