Yeah that's what I'm thinking. I'd really like to determine my oil pressure though before I just assume that. I'll have to figure out how I can use the sensor to determine that from the engine maybe. BTW, do you know if I can just plug the vapor evap port? I don't want pressure building up, so I could always just run a tube to the fender area.

Oh and in case you were curious, I did have to have the #31 pin hooked up for the starter/clutch pin. Other than that, spot on!

Still can't get my oil pressure gauge to work with the swap. Not sure if I'll be able to. I think I might just throw in an aftermarket to mount on my windshield cage bars on top of the tranny temp.

FINALLY drove it around... Spent the day getting all the post swap quirks done. Fittings leaking a bit, fluids, bleeding, etc... The best part? My speedometer and tach work without even touching them. From what I read, they should not have worked without some work put into them... Super happy about that though. I didn't think I would, but I need a tune. It sometimes wants to die after revving it and when it comes back down to idle and its a bit sluggish. I don't think the computer is compensating for the cam as much as I would like, but there's other factors as well. Either way, a tune would get this thing running optimal

Awesome!

What'd you ever do about a driveshaft? My stock one was too short. We're hitting the JYs this week to look for one that will work or can be cut down to size. If we can't find one I'll just have one made.

I had one made at a local driveshaft shop for $200. Well worth the cost for a brand new shiny driveshaft with all new joints. My length was about 69.75" with my 9"

I'm looking for about 67.5" with the 8.8. Stock shaft is about 3" short.

That's a great deal to get a new one for $200. I haven't got any quotes yet, but guys I've talked to say I'll probably have to pay around $500 for one.

Hey bud, did you swap over a GEM module for the speedometer signal? I'm trying to find some sort of "wiring guide" for that but not having any luck.

I actually didn't swap a single thing for mine... All I did was the necessary repinning at the 42 pin connector and everything (minus oil pressure gauge) works as it should for the most part. The only thing slightly off is the RPM's which read anywhere from 5-700rpms more than actual.

I don't know how much it will help, but I have an EVTM for my year that I can grab anything out of that you might need. Not sure if it will correlate to yours, but it might give you an idea of something. Let me know if I can help out with that at all.

Interesting. Now that I have the driveshaft figured out and the tuner going, I may just try it out to see how it drives without the GEM. My tach seems to be reading pretty close with what the datalogging program was picking up. My tach was just under 150 RPM higher than the program at 4000.

From what I've read, it seems like the GEMs only result is to give a proper speed signal to the PCM so you have optimized shift points. For all I know, the tuning may be able to take that responsibility over.

I have the EVTMs for my 02 Ranger and the 98 Explorer donor. The guy at the shop told me the GEM he got was from an 02, but he's having trouble figuring out exactly how to wire it up with the Explorer parts. I sent Bob a PM too, so hopefully he can shed some light on it.

The '98 Expo PCM/Harness should be providing the needed speed signal to the rest of the systems via the transmission mounted VSS.

Only on the 99 and later Expo's did the speed signal function move to the ABS system needing additional mods to get a speed signal.

You should be good to go on this front! The output from the VSS will completely satisfy the needs serviced by the later OSS that came out of the Ranger.

This is awesome news! I guess since most swaps for my year Ranger use 99-01 Explorers, I did a bad job by assuming I would have to do the same thing. Thank you!

Lol it's all good man. I talked to the guy back up at the shop and let him know. He put the truck up on the lift and ran it without any issues, and said the speedometer looked good. Guess we should've just tried that in the first place.

I'll leave the thread hijack at that haha. Thanks again guys.

Realized I never posted this, but I got a dyno tune a few weeks back. SO MUCH BETTER. 24whp/24tq increase from before to after tune alone. Made 199WHP/234TQ. Not too shabby at the wheels with a 9", 35's, and a fairly stock engine! Somehow, the wiring was backwards going to the right o2 sensor causing it to max out the fuel trim on the right bank. Tuner fixed that real quick and had it back to me fully tuned in less than 24 hours. Drives great, shifts super firm, and sounds awesome.

No question, the better part of 200WHP out of a mostly stock 302 is pretty darn good.

I've been so tempted to get mine tuned and your results are only pushing me harder down that path.

What was the cost for the tune?

Nice! Those aren't bad numbers at all. I'm still in the process of data log tuning with mine. Once MPT gets it dialed in, I'm heading to a dyno.

Yeah I'm happy overall. It was definitely expensive. $125/hr adds up quick... $660... but I would pay it again. He solved A LOT of little issues in less than 6 hours or work that I would have never been able to, and gave me peace of mind that I can push the engine and tranny and not worry about it. The truck spent a good 45 minutes on the dyno as well, so ALL conditions were accounted for. Plus, the HP gain alone was pretty awesome and just showed how much the truck needed it...

Not sure why I can never receive videos from iPhones at any quality, but here is the truck running behind work real quick. Tuned and running good. Stupid Apple products.
