Not sure if this is in the right place but oh well.

So I know the last time I got new brake pads was December 06. 2.5 years. And I dont really know if they did just the front, or the rear drums also. Im sure Im pretty close to being due for new brakes though, and I will either need to turn my rotors, or get some new ones.

I dont have money for this right now, but want to save up, and do it right, but as inexpensive as I can.

First I assume the only way to check is to take my wheels off right?

Also Is it worth it to buy the parts and have a mechanic do the work or should I attempt this on my own? I have connections to a garage and a lift if I needed it, and my lil bro and I could do it, but it would be our first. And honestly the rear drums intimidate me more than anything.

I just dont know how to check their conditionw ithout paying a shop money right now.

Also suggestions on brakes/rotors, not drilled or slotted, or high performance, but better than stock.

drums are not too hard, there is a how to article on here that explains it really well. I had never done drums be4 and I sat and looked at it for a while. it took me a day to do and once i did it once I can do them in about half hour. I would get at least the hardware kit, which has the springs and stuff and the self adjuster kit and new pads. if you have questions just ask, i did recently, and fresh in my mind.

 

If you think you are competent enough to do them yourself do that. Drums are harder than discs but you do one side at a time you will be fine. I would get slotted rotors not drilled. Rangers are not race cars no need to waste money. To check them you are going to have to pull the wheels off. The front are easy to see then. The rears you will have to then pull the drums off. Which at times can be a real B#$%*. If your rotors and drums are within specs. I would turn them to save money if that is what you are trying to do.
