busted my transmission

i have a 97 4.0 4x4. last night i was mudding and i got cross rutted and my truck started going towards a tree. so i stopped put it in reverse and tried to get out but i started getting stuck because there was a little hill behind me and i don't have lockers. i went back n forth for a few minutes then i through it in drive and punched it before it was all the way in gear, i know it was stupid, but i heard a pop and my truck wouldn't go forward but i could go back. i had to get a buddy with a dodge 1500 with 35" mud grapplers on it to yank me out. then another buddy pulled my all the way home, which took about an hour.

do you think it could be rebuilt, or is it toast? i was looking around on other forums and found out that i have the 4r55e, but i also found out i can swap in the 5r55e with a little bit of work, does anyone know what is involved in this swap?
thanks for any help

definately not, i cant believe i did it. i was at a mud bog one time and a guy kept doing that and it threw the gears through the case, the floor, the dash and busted the windshield. it broke the guys foot in the process.
my mom works at a local dealership and one of the guys said he could check it out for me.
the reason i was asking about the 5r55e was because there is a 98 ranger at a local junk yard where my buddy works, so it might be cheaper to do the swap

as they said, I would think twice before buying a transmission from a jy.

At the very least, I would check the fluid and see if its burnt and what not.

How long did you go back and forth for? Not really supposed to do that for any more than 30 seconds. I took an A4LD apart, where the owner had done the back and forth trick, all the clutch plates were literally welded together, drums were warped, bands shot. It deals a good amount of damage.

Are you sure it isn't a 5 speed auto already? The 5r55e's came on 4.0's in 1997, 1996 and back was the 4 speed.

I know I had a 5 speed auto in my 97' 4.0. Trans code on door sticker should be "D"

yea, but the only things that were really any good on it were the shafts, and the valve body wasn't bad. It pretty much needed a 100% rebuild.
