Ok I absolutely hate the ifs on my truck especially the wheel hubs I've purchased At least 3 or 4 and now its time for another. I've only had my truck 45k miles, my front cross member that holds the lca's took a hit a while back its since been "fixed" by a collision shop may be one of the reason why? The other would running the hubs with no cv's cause them to fail, I have converted my 4x4 to a 4x2 since last time i broke a cv the pass side one it took out the whole side to the housing so I got rid the whole 4x4 system in hopes of eventually doing an SAS but with the way gas is and the amount of driving I must do on a daily basis at least 70 miles I need something better on gas so now I just want to fix it and sell it. The only other conclusion is that the hubs I've used in the past were not Timiken? So should I spend the extra 60-70 dollars on the Timiken ones or just get another ebay one and call it a day?

 

Thats your problem. The CVs are a structural part of the 4x4 wheel bearings. Its actually very unsafe to run them without the CVs in place. They can grenade and send your wheel flying down the road.

It would also be in your best interest to buy the quality Timken units instead of the cheapies.

 

Its the tires. They are hard on the bearings especially if you off road the truck.

You must have cv in place or some other cover to prevent stuff from getting into the bearings. Water will destroy the grease and the bearing will fail.


I wouldn't buy those cheap brands, spend the cash for the timken.



FWIW, you can out some mileage on them with the grinding sound. If they get bad enough they will let the rotor touch the knuckle.

 

If you don't want the full CV shaft in there, cut the outter boot off and pull the outter shaft off the CV and just install the outter shaft into the knuckle without the main center CV shaft in it.

 

Since I've been doing it completely wrong running with no cv's this brings me to my next question is there any way that a 2wd spindle could work in replacement of my 4wd steering knuckle?

The edge spindle should bolt in.
