4x4 doesn't work, no lights, no nothing

hi to all, I'm new to the Ranger world and to this forum, I have a problem with the 4x4 system, I turn the **** to the 4x4 high and nothing happends, the lights don't turn on, I turn to the 4x4 low and still nothing, no clicks no sound, nothing, I know that the 4x4 lights work because I can see them turn on when I start the engine. I searched but I only found post that said that there 4x4 lights turned on and off, but none like mine. What do I start to check first??? Thanks a lot for your help.

check your fuses.....look in the owners manual for the fuse location and check there....if that dont work, check the switch, and if that dont work, check the shift motor........

Ok, problem found!!! , after hours of testing, checked all the fuses, relay box, switch connections, etc. And found nothing, I decided to clean the shift motor, then guess what, it works now. I didn't think it was the motor cause the 4x4 lights didn't turn on, I guess the lights turn on when the 4x4 actually engages. It works different in my mothers truck hers is a 99. But ohh well, but now that it works I have another problem , when I advance, theres a loud clunk from the front end, the tires roll a bit then "clunk" then they roll again then a big clunk again, what do I start to check? Could the front differential be damaged??? Thanks for your help.

I not sure what you are really dealing with but know that with any four wheel drive it's good to engage it once a month or so just to keep eveything from getting seezed up....not sure if what your are dealing with would fit into that category or not.......what i am saying is if it has sat for a long time

Mine got stuck in low range about 10 miles from civilization once. The only way I got it to go again was beating the crap out of the T-Case with a tire iron. After several minutes of banging on it with my friends and family wondering wtf I'm doing, it clicked into 2wd and off I went.
