4x4 randomly working, electical problem?
my 99 Ranger that i Just put a body lift on has been actin up a little lately, I went wheelin the other night, and I went to climb the first hill, put it in 4lo and proceeded to climb the hill, got about halfwayup and the rear end started sinkin in the sand, turns out, i was only in 2wd. Back myself down the hill to a flat spot, check underneath to see if anything was wrong, didnt see anything. I put it back into 4lo (after going back to 4hi and 2wd a few times) and it worked.
last night, I went out again, I hit the first big mud puddle, and instantly i knew i wasnt in 4wd (and stupid us, forgot the straps a half hour drive away ) i switched the switch a few times, and 4wd kicked in, and i drove right out of it. it kept randomly not working throught the night.
The lights on the dash work normally, along with the clicking noise you can hear when you put it in/out of 4wd. I checked all my electrical connections and didnt see anything loose, but it was dark out last night, im going to try that again today.
any other ideas?
I also think its a differnt problem than this guy

I think his doesnt work at all, mine still works, just not every time I hit the switch

sounds like a possibly bad electrical connection on the tcase underneath. I don't remember but i saw somewhere someone talking about redoing the electrical connections because they were getting bad. Also, if something got inside the case it could make it act wierd, but thats not too likely to happen.

Check your grounds from when you did your BL. Also find the shift motor and locate the wire harness for it...follow it to the frame/body and make sure you didnt pinch it. It may be a hub issue too....which is that uncommon. Does the 4x lights come on when your in each range? If so you might want to look into either the hub fix mod or the new AVM manual hubs. Follow the clicky for AVM info.

The lights do come on every time I put it in 4wd.
I found that this sequence works to get it into 4lo.
turn truck off, turn key to on, let all lights light up, then go away, start truck in park, put it in 4hi (starting from 2wd), put it in drive for a second, shift to nuetral, then into 4lo, then drive, and it works every time.
I washed the truck good last night, and rechecked everything, nothing looks out of line.
Last night I tried starting in 4hi on my street, go up to like 10-15 mph, and shift into 2wd, and i could feel it shift, so maybe its working again, im going to have to go try it out today.
is there any way everything could be so caked in dirt/mud that it wouldnt work? I went wheeling 2 days in a row and my truck became quite a disaster

Hmm i better check out my truck. I always thought i went straight from 2hi to 4lo. I better check on that!

^ As long as your in nuet with the brake depressed while fully stopped, then you can go from 2h to 4lo. Your can do that with both the BW 1350 and 1354 e-shift t cases. Its all based on the synchro's and the shift position sensor working together with the shift motor.
Steve- It almost sounds more like you are have hub problems. If this happens again jack up the trucks front end, shift into 4hi and see if the wheels spin. If not Im willing to bet your hubs are shot. So if you do find that its your hubs that are shot, either do the 98-00.5 hub fix or what i would recomend is the AVM hubs...gotta love manual engaging hubs!

tell me more about the AVM hubs, I went out last night again, and my 4wd worked great untill I got stuck in a large mud puddle, after that It wouldnt go into 4wd without alot of playing around.
One of my buddies said that if it isnt going into 4wd, and you roll it backwards in reverse for a bit, then put it in 4wd, it means the hubs are going, and sure enough, we put it in reverse and then it went into 4wd.
whats the 98-00.5 hub fix? and is it cheap?
Edit: I found the hub fix in the how to, what exactly does it do? Im still doing more searching on it, so bear with me, im new to 4x4's

The hub fix basically eliminates the vacuum disconnects from your PVH's, it makes it like the 00.5+ rangers with the live axel set up.
As far as the AVM hubs, they eliminate the vacuum disconnects as well, but in a better way....Just like 4x4's from years past with manual engage/disengaging hubs you actually have to get out and turn the hub lock a 1/4 turn to lock the hubs in. Cost is roughly $100-$125 and they are available online. Follow this clicky to read more and if you want to order them just follow the link to them.
