Fill tranny fluid in shifter hole

It's time to change my tranny fluid in my 5-speed but I had an idea. Since I'm going to be changing my shifter, cant I just pour the new fluid in through the shifter hole? I know to still leave the fill plug out so it is filled to the proper level. Anyone foresee a reason I couldnt do this?

I dont see why you couldn't, just dont make a mess haha. I would think it would be easier in the filler hole but thats jsut me, i know it can be hard to get the fluid into though.
