NEED HELP! Fuel Filter Disco on 05'?

I am trying to follow the hanes manual to replace my fuel filter. I already relieved the pressure.

The problem is that the quick disconects do not match any of the ones shown in the book and I can't figure out how to get them off.

The book shows two different R connectors. One of them you squeeze the two tabs sticking out of the top of the disco and push/pull the clip down. the other one you spread the tabs apart and push/pull the u shaded clip down.

The ones on my truck have a green/orange band on the inlet side of the filter. There are two tiny holes where I would expect the U shape piece to protrude so you could spread or squeeze it and allow it to release. I can look into the tiny holes and see the colored plastic rings but can't figure any way to release it. Seems like maybe you need a special tool to stick in the holes?

Same situation on the outlet side it is a green band.

Scared to break them cuz the book says you have to replace the entire fuel line if you break it.

Any ideas?

It is an 05' xlt 4x4 ext cab 4.0

Thanks in advance

My dad has a 2010 and the clips on his also do not look like mine or the book.

I figured it out. You need a special tool. They didn't have the right size in the cheapo version and they want 25 bucks for the one that fits. It is the same price to just have it installed and that will be easier.

i had the same problem with the tank fittings last weekend.i just used a pair of 90 degree picks. all i had to do was slide them up underneath the lip, make sure they slide in between the clamp in the fitting and the nipple, and then pry them apart until the line slides off.

I dont know if theres enough room to use the pick trick. just get the "special tool" from the parts counter at your dealer. little plastic thing that you just slide in and your done, two come in the package. ive had mine for over 6 years, and use them countless times on my old explorer and once already on Ranger. yes they are a rip off but you'll only need to buy them once.

look just like this... and each year i always mix up which color is the right one to use...
