Why are these lights so expensive?

The cheapest I've seen them has been $1800 on eBay. Why is this? I'm not in the loop when it comes to auxiliary lighting, so what makes these special? They're Hella 4000 Rallye's.

I wanted to mount two of them side by side on my front bumper in front of the grille like the old GT500's:

these are your standard 4000s
Amazon Amazon

They also have the 4000i which is HID that is around 450-500 bucks per light. The lights in the picture appear to be the 4000i's.

That's not bad! I might just do it now! I have some square Hella fog lights coming, and if I add the 4000's, I'll have a use for that second fog light switch in my radio bezel. Thank you :)

I actually considered a set of 500's a while back, but I like the larger diameter and the plastic covers of the 4000's better.

dont spend that kinda money on a set of lights. get the 700FFs, bigger than the 500s and almost as cheap.

I heard when you convert them to hids you have nothing but problems.. I do want something brighter for mine though.
-They get too hot and melt the plastic shell
-The bulbs are too long for the housings
-The pattern of the ff's is horrible with the hids

I don't care about the whole HID vs. Halogen thing. Halogen would be perfect for me, and these lights will rarely (if ever) be used.

It's been done several times. btm757 did it to his and he hasn't had any problems. You have to either cut or shape the back of the housing to fit them. Never seen anyone melt them yet

I don't care about beam pattern I only use them off roading or going to parents farm at night

The 55W was ok, I had to step them up to 100W thought. It made a lot of difference

Another question: I ordered some Hella fog lights yesterday, and I expect them next week. My truck is pre-wired for fog lights behind the dash and underneath the hood, but doesn't have the relays. If I install the relays, cut the pigtail off of some junkyard Explorer fog lights and splice it into the Hellas' wiring, will that work?
