What is the ranger's competition when it comes to chevy's truck. i assume the dakota is what dodge puts up against the ranger and the toyota throughs in the tacoma?

The s10 probably, even though they dont make it anymore. The current rival would be the colorado.

I had an s10 before my ranger. i bought it for $500 with a 4.3 and a 4r700r trans. it was ugly and didnt run too good. i pulled the motor and put 10:1 pistons, polish and port the heads, pete jackson timing set, .512 cam, big block tbi unit, roller rockers, full length headers, a trans shift kit, and 3.73 10 bolt posi. the truck was ugly but i bracket raced it quite a bit and my best pass was 13.2@109

I broke the flexplate and suspected it to be a rod-knock so i bought my ranger, then i tore it apart to find it was the flexplate so i fixed it . i sold it for $925

they are turds as DD but a nice 13 second budget vehicle with under $3k invested
its the last GM i will ever own

The best part was to see my neighbors eyes when i walked all over him in his stock c5 vette
I have a pic somewhere, i gotta find it and scan it. i had it at norwalk, which isnt as slimy as Milan dragway and in the pic at the line, the drivers side front wheel is off the ground about 2'' the motor was solid mounted so it flexed alot

I dont understand why the Colorado is considered "midsize" when compared to the Ranger it is around 6 inches longer but about 4 inches narrower......Also since Ford is killing the Ranger this year, ive been looking into an eventual replacement for mine. Since a fullsize truck wont fit in my garage, Im looking "midsize", Anyway I emailed GM yesterday about if the Chevrolet Colorado/GMC Canyon will be coming with the 5.3 V8 soon and here is they're response:
"The V8 engine for the Colorado is scheduled to be available for our
2009 model year vehicles. Unfortunately, we do not have any further
product information available for this feature. We suggest contacting us
back around April or May of this year for an update; this is usually when
the next year’s product information becomes available. You may also
want to sign-up for e-mail updates online." So as Ford is letting the Ranger die off in 2009, the General will be giving small/midsize fans what we mostly all want, a V8 option for your little work horses....

I wouldn't count on a V-8 Colorado anytime soon. Big Brother has decided to once again ruin our fun. If you want a fun car or truck, buy it now cause your days are numbered.

Yeah times are changing, this 35 mile regulations is almost beyond comprehention. How would you expect an Expedition, F 150, or even a Ranger get 35 mile per galon, when a vehicle like the Honda Civic barely gets 35 mpg. Hell it may not truely acheive 35mpg.....The future of vehicles sold in America will be interesting.......But anyway I still see GM pumping out the 5.3 liters in the Canyon/Colorado untill Big Brother finaly says NO!

It's called diesel, and although at this point in time can't pass Ca emissions, are capable of 70mpg in small european cars. Not being interested in passing everything on the road and dragstrip, something like that in my Mazda/Ranger giving me 40/50mpg would be a welcome way to extend the life of my truck... 'till salt do us part'.
I could care less about the top speed so long as it could cruise all day at 70mph and still give me 40mpg. Now that would rock! The low end torque for 4x4 would get me where I wanted to go, sigh.

Not totally true. Its going to come down to turbo'd 4bangers for the performance. You can get a mazda speed3 with 263hp and still get mid-upper 20's in city and 30's hwy. It wouldn't take much to push that car up to 35mpg.

Long as trucks arent effected, I'm fine with it. Soon as they start messing with MPG in trucks and power out of them, then I say there's a big issue. I do think though, that the automotive community, as large as it it, should stand up to Big Brother and tell them off with the restrictions however.

I am pretty sure trucks are affected by this. If not they will be, This is an attack on the SUV and what the libs consider an overindulgence by Americans who actually earn enough money to afford a Suburban. Also comparing Turbo 4 bangers in Neons or what ever isn't a good idea. The actual HP # is meaningless, it all depends on what range the number is in. In a little ricer car they can afford to have all their power in the higher rev's, as they weigh nothing. To get a 4000#+ car moving you can't do that. Also I don't think you all understand the long term ramifications of this. Smaller less powerful engines will only get you part of the way there. They have two choices to meet this, Raise the price of every car $6-10K for new technology to meet this demand and maintain performance (Not going to happen) or go to smaller lower Hp cars just like the 80's, with todays prices (20K for a soup can with a single cylinder Kyoto Powercell). You guys think the ranger is underpowered at 207 HP? Wait til your back in the 120 HP range. think your Mom's Focus is too small, that will be roomy compared to the future smart car type vehicles that will be thrusted upon us. Diesel's will be here, yes, but they won't help as much as you think. The price will be a huge option box to check and we will be stuck with lackluster performance, like the TDI Jetta. anyone ridden in one of those turds? I have and if that is what you want out of an automobile, a $25K dollar compact car with an Ipod jack and a 0-60 time in the mid teens, then the future is looking bright for you, but as a car guy I have to say this is BS. They are not going to be putting the same cummins diesel that move the hell out of a Dodge ram in a Dodge Neon. They will put the same low powered maintenance hungry over emissioned engines that instead of exhaust have a stream of Kittens playing with yarn coming out of the tailpipe, that the brits are stuck with.

This is not how America works, if gas was high enough that people were demanding 35 MPG cars then Detroit would be putting out 35 MPG cars. Mandating a business and consumers buy a product that obviously they have no desire to buy is not a free market.

D, you couldn't have said it better. ****, both you and HJ. As much as I hate hyjacking threads, this is justifiable.

What really sets me off about this is the fact that every soccer mom wants a Suburban, but doesn't want to pay the price for the lack of gas milage. All the environmentalists **** and moan at the fact that SUV's are destroying the planet. 5-6 years ago it wasn't a big issue. Another factor as well is if diesel takes off, what does that do to the trucking industry. Diesel will hit an all time high, as it has been for the last 18 months, and all of our product prices will skyrocket. Why? Because everyone wants a diesel. I'll sound two sided here since I want a diesel pickup, but for utility purposes, not to use as a trophy. Now the government is mandating 35 mpg? Tell me ONE vehicle other than a hybrid POS or a VW that gets 35 mpg and has some sort of utility factor out of it? Government mandation is insane and it's going to continue until we the people stand up and fight against it.
