On the highway from Buffalo to Chicago this last September I had measured 28.9mpg going 70mph down 80/90/94 for 500 miles. This was on 93 octane. The car has about 520whp on 93 octane with a completely safe, no-knock tune.
E85 I get about 17mpg mixed city/highway mix between having some fun and taking it easy. I ran 589whp on E85 after pulling a few degrees of timing to make sure I was safely behind MBT (because you can't hear E85 knock - don't want to push parts)
That is excellent for power/mileage combination. There is no reason why a ranger would need anything bigger than a 2.0 IMO. The new GTDI would be a perfect engine for the ranger, with high compression and advanced timing that comes with DI, it would easily outperform todays 4.0 with less weight and no lag. I'm sure tuners could easily adapt bigger turbos, upgraded fuel systems and forged parts to make quite the performing engine out of it. Inline engines are the easiest to adapt for boost.

ya know i was worried about the v6 pushing the limits and not making the v8 worth it.. but the 5.0 that cranks in the 400's is pretty sick.
here is a cool vid i seen on streetfire on the v6.... gotta nice rumble
