Icon5 Truck Tool Box Question

Okay so I am looking for a tool box for my truck and can not figure out what I want to do. I really want one that mounts on the bed rails which then either means modifying my tonneau cover which I found a place local that will charge me $95 to $125 to shorten the cover. Or should I get one that fits in the bed and the tonneau cover does not need to be modified. I just don't like the one that goes in the bed because I don't want to drill into my bed.

Other problem I have is I want a black tool box because well I don't like the bright boxes. Home Depot is the cheapest I found on a black one for compact trucks but they are sold out and don't know when they will get them (on line only item), Tractor Supply has one for $309 but like a 45 minute drive or Northern Tool has one for $319 and a 20 or so minute drive. Just looking for input and some help. Or other places to get a decent price on a box.

Can you take a bright aluminum tool box sand blast it or anything and then paint it black?

On the black I would be concerned about getting it to last if I painted myself. A shiny box is better than a peeling black box anyday.

I did some searching for a deep box for my new truck. The only one I found that had a good solution for the wheelwell was Lowes. It was $238 for the box(shiny). At Tractor supply the box was hacked up so bad to fit the wheelwell that only 2-3' of the length was "deep". It was shaped like this :

Lowes was shaped like this:

If you're getting a truck tool box make sure you get one with a strong locks, cheapo boxes come with cheapo locks.
It's important if you don't want you're stuff nicked.

I have a Delta box and it's great. It has a single lid, which is better for getting large items in the box, and locks on the side as opposed to in the middle, you can get them from Delta in black too.

Wayne very nice art skills the first set through me a little then when you re did the drawing I figured it out. I want a black one because of the fact that every other accessory on my truck is black so I know I am looking at a price difference because of that. I really do like Cole's box with the locks and the button on the side of the box as to reaching over the side of the bed to get to the latches and locks.

Cole I see you are from WI where did you get yours from?

Low profile box's are best imo. cover up the least amount of the window(about 2"). You can get it sprayed with line-x or Rhino-liner and it should last forever. Try a truck accessory shop I got my old Delta Low-Pro for about $212.

Thanks Trigger. I did find a really good website can't think of what it is off top of my head but they have great prices on Delta and if I ship it to a friends shop (business) I don't have to pay shipping and a black low pro is going to run me about $319 so I guess wait till tax return and get it then. I am liking the Lo Pros

Gotta remember I want a black one and for some reason the black ones are more expensive. I don't want a silver one on my truck because everything else I have is black or dark.

Here is a better question you guys use the J-hooks to mount yours or drill into your box? I used the J-hooks on some of my old trucks with boxes and loved how they worked.

I J-hooked mine. Also, if you need max storage space, Triggers box goes in about 1/3 the way down. A box like mine is straight. I don't know if you can get a Trigger style top with my bottom (for lack of better wording).

You can do that^, I just ordered mine like that, because I occasionally hauled long stuff in the bed.

I like the lo-pro bar but only problem is that if I shorten my tonneau cover then I have to roll the cover to get at the latches. So I am looking for the gull-wing as putting long items in a tool box isn't what I am using it for. Place to keep my "jump pack" for dead batteries, trailer draw bars, first aid kit, and other items that are in the back of my cab. Do you guys think with what my truck looks like if I put a bright box in would it look strange or out of place??? Meaning the black grill guard, black tailight guards and all??

I think either way it would look good. Black would be great, but if you can't find what you need in black, I think polished would look good also.

i had the one trigger01 posted in black...but the only drawback was the lock...had to get in the bed to unlock it...

you can always get the polished (bright) and then get some herculiner, its actually a little shiny

What is the width across the bed rails on the Ranger? is it 60 or so inches? I don't know what it is and its pretty cold outside to measure it. Just thought I would see if anyone knows what it is off the top of their head.

Thanks

I've had three boxes on my ranger....two of which were black. Pretty much ANY box that's made for a compact truck will fit a ranger. Most manufacturer websites list specs and tell ya what fits what truck.

Delta Low-Profile(just like triggers, but black)....has the annoying notch that rangers don't need:

Delta Champion Deep Compact box. Needed to get a new one because the old one didn't fit with the headache rack. This one because it's deep, also has the notches that ranger's don't need. This ones was hard to get. No where around here had it. And if I ordered it, it would be X ammount plus 150 for freight! But I lucked out with a local farm & ranch store....they just made their truck load order from Kentucky or something and they simply added mine on. Pretty penny, but i love the box.

The first box pictured, I drilled new holes in the box to use the J-hooks. The factory holes aren't in the right spot for a ranger, so i drilled new ones. One the second box, I drilled holes through the box, headache rack, and bedrails and used bolts.
