Kids and safely in Ext Cabs

Can anyone tell me how safe the jumpseat area is for kids in extended cab Rangers.

This is what's going to make or break the decision for me. Maybe it can be compared to a small import car in normal accidents?

The sideways position... Is it actually BETTER than norman positions? Is there enough room for 2 small kids?

Thanks, guys!

I can tell you that there is enough room for 2 small children, but it is definitely not as safe as a 4 door sedan. If it is a family you are trying to take care of, id get something with an actual back seat rather than 2 jump seats. Safety first man...

Yeah I feel the same way. Not to mention for small kids the 4x4's is pretty high, and it's terrible with the way the seats face and the face that you have to shut the mini doors to buckle them in.

If you want a truck, but want safety for your kids buy a sport trac, or a crew cab F-150. The Rangers aren't practicle (sp?) for hauling people, they are made to hold two people only I think.

my daughter is five and loves riding in the back and fits fine. Safetywise i have not seen any crash test data. Thats why i also bought an explorer and if we are going out as a family we drive that.

Not the most safe or comfortable ride for the kids. I toss mine in the jumpseats if we are making a quick ride somewhere and the wife has the car. But other than that we take the wife's car.

defiantly not very safe, no shoulder strap and youre heads are against the side of the truck and also very close to the seats so any impact can be extremely dangerous

I have an 8 year old and a 13 year old. They fit, but they used to fit better. If I could do it again I wouldve gone full size. On the + side though, we took our 2 and one other kid to Six Flags last summer. Everyone was feeling the crowdedness of the truck, and they wont ask to do that again

I really don't know what Ford was thinking when they put the jump seats in the extended cab Ranger. They are worthless and I am considering removing them. They are not in the way, just useless.

When I was a kid my dad owned a '41 Ford Business Coupe. Man, I'd love to have that car now. It had fold down seats from the side but lots more room than the Ranger does. My dad, mom, sister and I did a trip from Lou. Ky to the Smokey Mountains in that car around 1947-8. I was born in '41, she in '42. We didn't take another long trip in it due to my sister and I fighting a lot.

The next car was a 1949 Ford convertable.

I've had personal experience with the back jump seats and a car wreck. They do not hold up under stress. I was hit by a drunk driver on the front passenger side and the jump seat belt failed. My little brother was sitting back there and unfortunately ended up laying on me when everything stopped moving. But in that wreck 5 people were in the 2 vehicles, and only 2 survived, the drivers. It's an extreme case I know, but whose to say when something like that will happen to you?? I never thought I'd end up being a victim and look what happened.
I do not reccomend seating your two kids back there. Period. No real head, neck, and back support. No real safety belt. Bad choice all around. I love my truck but it's not suitable for little kids, in the jumpseats that is.

go to youtube.com and type in: Ford Ranger Crash Test. Injuries should be kept to a minimum considering they will be up against the back of the cab and the back of the seat. non-the-less they will be strapped in. if the acceident is bad enough where they need medical attention fast, then that is were there is a problem. that is an odd place to extract a person.

just something to consider.
