I believe it was (rather creatively) called the Mazda 'Truck' back then. If I'm not mistaken the original Ranger was designed by Mazda under contract from Ford. Production wasn't moved to the US for a couple years. And there were substantial differences from the first Ranger and the Mazda trucks. And the Mazda B-series has grown more like the Ranger over the years, not so much the opposite. Although half the parts in the modern day Ranger are still from the Mazda design/era. The manual transmission comes to mind..
