For some of us, the Ranger's design is ideal. But for many, the Ranger is a "rough cut" vehicle compared to others. Talking mainly street drivers here, not offroad.
The Ranger has been taking hits in the press (reviews) for about 5 years now. It's popularity IS dropping. Ford is looking to do something different and I can almost guarantee most of us won't like it.

I love the Ranger, but it was the best truck 5 years ago, now there are better trucks on the market and ford sits on there thumbs instead of making a competitive truck. I got flamed a while back for saying that the Toyota Tacoma is a far superior truck to the ranger, but it is. It is the truck Ford should build. It gets better gas mileage, it is roomier with a better laid out dash (The current ranger dashboard is a 12 year old design, so it's not tought to have a better layout). It has more power, can tow more, and has tones of features that most of you have to mod your rangers to get (Overhead console, full length center console, and a floor shifter) It is just as capable, if not more than the ranger off-road, and my favorite, not torsion bars hanging down.
Now Ford has three vehicles that they aren't willing to update and will just kill off in there current form, The Crown Vic, the E series van, and the Ranger. In there current state they are the best they will ever be. To make them better it is going to take a whole redesign from the wheels up, and Ford obviously has no interest in that until the absolute last minute possible. I am sure it is a money thing, but IMO if they want to turn the whole Import>American car sebate around they need to start building better machines, or the company is going to continue this downward spiral.

eh face it, they dont care whether its made in the US or not. theyd rather pay some slave $2 a week to work 80hrs to make these cars.... after all, thats the american way right?
ford could have had a good thing going if they brought the 4 door ranger to the US, but they wont, cause they feel, that anyone looking to buy a 4 door ranger, can buy a 4 door F150 for $15K more and thats that, or the ugly sport trac for $5-10K more... instead, those potential buyers go to gmc, and chevy, or some other make since ford doesnt offer a 'midsize' 4 door pick up.... right there they shot them selves in the foot.
and all this talk about them losing money? i wouldnt say its a lack of sales, the ford dealers around here cant keep rangers on the lot cause they sell em so fast, same with the rest of the vehicals. the prob is poor management by ford, nothing else. the peons at the bottom arnt bankrupting these companies, its all the greedy sob's at the top that cant keep their paws out of the cookie jar. i mean seriously think about it, if Microsoft, and gates gave all upper management a 1000% raise, along with a bunch of other crap, MS would be whining their going bankrupt too.

The US has a 4 door ranger already. Its called the ' sport trak '. *WE* all know its an exploder with limited bed space, but the general public ( soccer moms ) and couch potatoes don't know the difference.
HJ stated he likes the Taco or whatever rice of the day it might be. He called it a ' better ' vehical. Better vehical or not, Its not providing a paycheck for any of my neighbors. I have a Ford, GM , American Axle and Delco plants within a stones throw from me.
So go buy your rice, I'll have my neighbors knocking on your doors for some eats when their all laid off.
THAT means more to me then an alledged ' dated ' platform. If said Rice is so much better, why isn't everyone on this site running to trade their trucks in to get one?

You are aware that toyota is building one of the biggest assembly plants in the world for the tacoma and the tundra in texas. Why texas?? Toyota said that the cost of living in cheaper in texas for its employees and quality of life is good. Hmm all the american car companies are in detroit where the cost of living is pretty high. Also They said that they want to build picks up where they can get direct feedback where people use them the most...Farms, hunters, contstruction workers and Last time i was in texas almost everyone has a pick up. Hey it wont give your neighbors a paycheck but in texas when its done that place will employ a buttload of people. I saw this on that one stock market show on msnbc and they said start investing in toyota hardcore cuz when that plants done being built the stock will be alot higher than it is now.

Because they have not changed it basically since 1998 ford still makes a lot of money off each one.
That's true, But I rarely see any rangers newer than 03. I Read somewhere there sales are down 45 percent from the peak in about 2002 or something. That's huge. I personally think they let it go too far to keep the Ranger name. There will be a replacement but it till be some Ghey new age name like Trapezoid, or something along those lines.
