Axle code 96 - means it's an open differential 8.8" setup w/ 3.73 gears.

Why were you expecting discs?
There are still quite a few 2014 vehicles that are equipped with rear drums.
The above posters are correct..2010 was the first year Ranger got rear discs and you should have either a 4R55E (trans code T) or a 5R55E (trans code D)....believe they offered both for a couple years but I may be wrong. You may be mistaking the 4R55E for a A4LD because it essentially is the same but with full electronic control. How did you determine you have an A4LD?

Before I bought it I checked cars.com and it talked about the major changes madt to the ranger after 1998, perhaps I misread it, but I thought it said the 4x4 xlt had a 5 speed tranny(5r55e), and 4 wheel disc abs...too late now, but I'll go back and check...and the transnission guy at AAMCO said it was definitely an a4ld tranny...must have been swapped during it's previous life. Love the truck, just have to fix a few things...getting abs codes about accelerator sensor and rear differential sensor...are these user fixable?
Thanks for the replies.

Went to AAMCO to have tranny checked out...felt wrong...tech said it was definetely an a4ld...but when I said the door jamb code said D, meaning 5r55e, he didn't know about that......???...thet showed me the pan with a fair amount of metal shavings on the magnet at the side of the pan...recommended not bothering with the servicing since it needed to be rebuilt....quoted 2500 to 2700 for rebuild...seems high so I called Ford about a remanufactured 5r55e...waiting for quote...thnx for reply

You can swap an Exploder rear axle in if you truly want Disc Brakes.
As far as the transmission goes. The A4LD and 5R55E are kissing cousins. They share nearly the same everything expect in two places. The Valve body is different (the 5R is Computer controlled, the A4 isn't) and the planetary in the 5R is 6 bolt. The A4 is 4 Bolt. Your tech could very well have no idea what he is talking about. There would be no reason to backwards (IMO) swap in a A4LD when a 5R55E would readily available at just about any Junkyard.

if the tranny needs replaced I would look for one from a salvage yard b4 getting a new ones. Some salvage yards even offer a limited but better than nothing warenty. Tranny went out on my ford focus about a year ago and rebuild was 2500 and ford wanted 4k for another one. Picked up one on ebay from a salvage yard for 750. Running like a champ sence.
