96 Ranger Advice

Wondering if I could get some advice here. There is a 96 4WD Ranger for sale for $1,000. It has 148k miles on it and runs fine. I am concerned that both the ABS and Check Engine lights are on. The current owner states that these have been on for over a year and he has not noticed any change in the running of the truck. He also says that the front bearings need to be replaced. What do you guys think? Is this a good deal? Is there anything I should take a look at before purchasing this truck? Thanks in advance.

Test drive it to an Auto Zone and pull the codes.

You could get the check engine light code but not the abs one.

I believe that that year of truck only has rear wheel ABS. Someone will correct me if I am wrong, but if that is the case, then there is something else, OR, it could be that the front wheel bearings are going, and tripping the ABS sensors?

What motor is in it? 4.0? They have a problem with the intake plenums leaking. Trust me my in leaking right now. I have had an engine light on for about a year now lol.

I have a 1996 4x4 with abs in the front and back, my light came on once and I popped the hood and wiggled the switch and it went away, you can re-pack the wheel bearings ( if you know how ) for the cost of some grease!! worse case scenario you can buy a new set of bearings, they are about 13 or 14 bucks each and there are 4 all together in the front, innner and outer on each side plus a seal.

The check engine light could very well be the charcoal canister and valve associated with it/no big deal.

As long as the engine is not knocking and the tranny shifts good and the frame is not rotterd out I would say GO FOR IT, ****, I know I would in a new york minute if it was some place near me.

Pics?? What kind of shape is the truck in? Sounds to me that the guy just didnt or care about routine maintenance. I bet the ABS and Check engine light are nothing big...probably just the guy being lazy.
