Hi everyone, just joined and read the existing threads that i could find but no mention of this situation.
Truck is a 2003 2.3, 5 spd with 35k miles on it when i bought it in 2006. I checked it over and there was no evidence of any crash damage etc.. 2 years ago I was rear ended but only the rear bumper was damaged - AiRbags did not go off.
The airbag light started coming on a couple of days ago, and, after reading earlier posts about the codes here i've determined the code is 1- 8.
Any help would be appreciated and thanks,

1-8 is Passenger Pretensioner Circuit Shorted to ground

 

Is it necessary to disconnect the battery to trouble shoot the passenger side airbag or is it enough to simply turn it off with the key?
