i have a brake problem
#1
i have a 4.0L engine which is great, but i have a brake prob
this past saturday evening, i went deer hunting with my uncle. i had to take my 2WD 98 Ranger into a lot of mud to get to where we were hunting. i guess this is kinda my fault because i knew there was mud, and i really wanted to get some mud on my truck, but after goin through all the mud my brakes make an awful crucnching noise when i brake decently hard. they stop just fine, but they sound like a fork in a garbage disposal. this sound continued after i cleaned off both of the front brakes (which are the ones that are making the noise), and cleaned off the undercarriage of the truck. any suggestions on how to make the sound stop, or at least make it quieter? Thanks for any input.
Cory
PS: this has happened before, and i have replaced the brake pads a few different times, and the rotors twice, and the sound never really stopped.

Like i said in the other thread you posted..
Most likely due, to the mud and crap, it got throught the rubber crap that keeps it out, it happened in my jeep, and ive seen it before.
Its a grinding noise, like 2 rocks together, your caliper, is sticking really bad. Im pretty sure of it, since you pretty much replaced everything else..

i was thinking along the same lines... great minds think alike dont they... ok let me translate what leo said...
ok heres what you do
remove the caliper from the truck
you should prolly take out the piston to check for excessive wear
so you stick a rag inbetween the piston and the other side of the assembly
then put a blow gun in the hole where you disconnected the brake lines and youll hear a pop and the piston will be out...
clean the piston and the inside and check the rubber boot for leaks or holes... if your boot has a hole in it go to the auto store and give it to them and they will get you a replacement... then you lube up the piston with some brake fluid put it back in the assembly put the boot back on and then you put it back together (brake pads ect) then bleed your brakes and then it should be ok... now that came directly from me without any help from the net.... i guess auto tech does help.... well i hope that this helps you if that is indeed your problem...

According to his post, hes replaced a few items in the brakes already, therfore i recommended he change it, he most likely by now has damaged the piston in the caliper.
There for i felt now use to elaborate further than i had done already.
No point in cleaning something that will only fail in the future cause of damage already done.
I say do it right the first time around and replace it.
Calipers arent THAT expensive.
