Noisey Fan...?

Whenever my fan comes on it makes a really loud humming sound. The sound is VERY noticable in the cab. Is there something wrong with it, or are they just that noisey? If its normal, how can I dampen the sound?
Thanks...

Has it always been that way?

When I was at the GenEdge Atlanta meet several years ago, one guy had that problem. It turned out, and I kid you not, that there was a MAGAZINE in his fan housing. Left there no doubt during assembly because there's NO WAY it got in there any other way.

We had to remove the fan from the housing (which can be done inside the engine compartment -- we did it in the WalMart parking lot), take out the problem stuff, then close it back up.

It was a Hot Rod magazine, as I recall.

Anyway, long story to say it could either be something caught in your fan throwing it off balance, or rubbing on it inside the housing.

Alright I will have to check that out. Maybe I left my 4 wheeler mag in there... Anyway, this is the first summer I have had this truck for. I bought it last winter. So it could have always sounded like this or it could be a new thing, not sure.

I guess I'm confused. You say that when your fan comes on it makes a humming sound. Unless you installed an aftermarket electric fan, your fan is allways spinning. What you might be hearing is the pump for your AC. It will click on and off to keep the system pressurised and does have a humming sound. Thay would also explain why you didn't hear it durring the winter.

Hmm... I did not realize the fan was always spinning. Well I think your right then because when I turn on the AC the sound stops. I usually dont use the AC though, I keep the windows down. So the sound is normal? I mean its a pretty loud hum.
Thanks...

You are probably using the AC and just don't know it. Ford, in their infinite wisdom, has the Ranger wired such that the AC compressor is enabled in just about every mode except 'Off' and I believe floor vents. This means that if you have the selector to defrost or dash vents the AC compressor is enabled, even though it is not in any of the 'AC' positions.

Some of us have done George Novak's 'AC mod' to disable this 'feature' and try to give us an extra MPG or two. Basically you clip or install a switch/relay in one wire in the dash and then you have the ability to enable or disable AC when you like.

I usually have it in the off position because I have the windows down. Anway, so the sound is not coming from tha fan? Its the pump for the AC? Does everybodys pump have a loud hum to it or is mine scrued up?

Mine is quite noisy and it's been replaced under warrenty once already by the previous owner. I think ford jipped me, the things making noise again after only 30k

are you talking about the blower fan or the engine fan?

IF its the blower fan.. 99% chance something is in there making it out of balance.
The engine fan...... maybe the clutch is bad??
