Like the title says, my 08 ranger sport will not come out of 4x4. Its a snow storm up here so i put the truck in 4x4 for maybe 30 seconds got out of my driveway now nothing. tried backing up putting it in park turning it off etc. looked at the electrical connections by the transfercase and the two i seen are pluged in tight. I can hear it clicking in the dash trying to take it out but no dice. The truck won't go into 4 low ether.

 

hit the shift motor with a wrench.
Not something very hard, but not a light tap.

 

Tried that, and nothing. I use the 4x4 alot during the winter. And its never gave an issue. I think I should have kept my 97.

Works great until tomorrow when the roads are dry. Gotta love having a lawn ornament with a payment.

 

If you use it all the time, Its either the switch in the truck, or your shift motor.

 

Yup, get under it and have someone play with the switch. If you can hear the motor trying to engage/disengage its not the switch.

 

if your desperate, unbolt the shift motor and change it by hand, then find out the problem. the shift motors are know for going past their stopping point, confusing the internal computer. easy to fix too.

 

Ill try that tomorrow. Like I can hear the module? Inside the dash clicking but nothing from the shift motor. I'm not new to rangers and I know they had problems with the shift motors but anyone I've ever heard of always had symptoms prior to failure. But when i take the motor off Is there anything I should look for. Also which way do i manualy turn the part in the transfercase. Thanks for bearing with me fellas!!

 

you hear the realy clicking in the dash.
I'd try what Nathan said, Get someone to move the switch and listen to the shift motor.
If you take it off, move the motor parts, if they're smooth moving then it may have been stuck.
From what i understand, It turns like a Key, if your looking at the back of the T-case, you should turn it counter clockwise.

Its was very common for shift motors to get sticky in colder climates. so, when you tapped on it, it may not have un-stuck all the way.

 

I can't even hear the shift motor trying to move. But when you turn the switch u can see the truck go under slight load (rpm drops) everytime it clicks (relay). I have tried giving it a few "love" taps with a wrench....as much as I want to use a 10 pound sludge hammer at this point. So I guess next is to take it off. I have read on alot of places you need to line it back up or something? Or is this just to take the actual motor apart?

 

Alright guys, It is in 2wd removed the motor, than switched it manually. anyways i tried to engage the motor once it was off the transfercase and nothing. Not even a click. So looks like im into a new motor. But im going to try and move the motor manually, see if its actually stuck or what's the deal.

 

Have you checked all associated fuses (SJB # 33, 28, 10 & BJB # 27)?

Here's the electrical info:

The Switch works similar to the blower motor resistor bank, switching in different resistance values in series between the four wheel drive control module.

At the Shift motor the connector should have the following wires:
Pin 1 Brown with Yellow stripe, pin 2 Green with Orange stripe, pin 3 White with Orange stripe, pin 4 Brown with Green strip, pin 5 Green with Orange stripe, pin 6 Brown with White stripe, pin 7 Gray with Orange stripe.

Pin 7 = MTR CW
Pin 4 = MTR CCW
Note, pins 4 & 7 appear to alternate between 12V and Ground, controlling direction motor turns (Clock Wise or Counter Clock Wise).

Pin 6 = Position Return. This pin appears to be common to pins 3, 2, 1, and 5 by means of an internal switch within the shift motor housing.

Pin 3 = Position 2
Pin 2 = Position 3
Pin 1 = Position 4
Pin 5 = Position 5

 

Thanks again for all your help guys. All my fuses are good. So i checked the power and it was receiving it at the plug. so i tried it again and i feel the motor click but it won't move. So I tried a Allen key in the motor and i can't move it at all. So long story short it must have bit the dust?

If you have the brown wire going into the case you need to disassemble the plug and slide that pin out in order to remove the motor.
