Fog Light Switch Help

So yesterday i was working on the truck putting in my hella 500ff's, i had them on for a couple days of by just cutting the factory fog light plugs and they worked great but i just wanted it to be temporary until i could put in the relay.

When I put in the relay it worked and then just stopped working, ive narrowed it down to somethin to deal with the trucks fog light wiring. I checked the fuse and it is good and i tried the relay using the battery as the switch and it worked. Then i tried re wiring it the way i had it and it doesnt work. The light also doesnt come on.

Could I have blown the switch? and if so how do I tell?

Check the fog light relays on the distro box under the hood.

Look them up in your owner manual to see which ones they are.

Have someone push the dash sw for the fogs, if the rely is clicking then it is working.

How did you hook up the new rely, what wires did you use from the OEM setup ?

IF you just took the OEM Fog Light wires going to the lights and used then to activate the relay and ran a new battery power for the new lights then there is no reason that it would affect anything,

Buggman has indicated that the OEM Fog Sw is a ground switching system and requires a special harness to run directly from the sw but if you used the existing lights wire off of the OEM relay then your problem has to be either the Relay, the fuse or maybe grounding.
Yo did say the lights worked so grounding may not be a problem but double check.

luck

What i did firsdt was cut off the connectors for the OEM fog lights and ran power to power ground to ground. That worked well but i wanted to add the relay to be safe. I connected the relay to power, ground and the lights. connected the passenger side OEM power to the passenger side OEM ground, then i connected the Drivers side power to the relay so it would be the switch to turn the fogs on and off. then i just capped off the drivers side ground.

The fuse to the OEM lights should be slot 8 right? and The OEM relay is the one you bend to do the fog light mod right?

I got that from the first post.

I am a little slow so I do not fully understand what you are saying here.

You said you connected the passenger side power and ground together, if so undo them… that should shot every time you turn on the fog; I do not believe it will affect the Fog Sw but the relay and fuses may have a problem with it.

This is what I would do…

Disconnect your lights and undo all wires...

1) Mount the relay as close to the battery as possible.
2) Take the power wire from the Driver’s side fog and connect it to pin 85 on the relay.
3) Run a wire from the relay pin 86 to ground.
(Chk it out ! - every time you click the Fog Light Sw “On” the new relay should click, if not check for power at pin 85).
4) Take the passenger side wires and cap them off with heat shrink the kind with adhesive inside or cut them back and then cap them but DO NOT CONNECT THE TWO WIRES TOGETHER.
5) Run a new fused wire from the battery to the relay pin 30.
6) Run a wire from the relay pin 87 to the closest light and then jump to the other light.
7) Run grounds - some people use the bumper, some the frame and some run the ground wires back to the battery; your call. (The “back to the battery” method give you the best most reliable grounding method. less chance of corrosion getting in and causing a problem in the future).

The above way you get rid of most of the OEM wiring but keep what you need to actuate the relay.
The new relay is a little redundant but it won’t hurt anything.
(If you want to run the OEM Fog light Sw on the) new relay contact Buggman on this site and talk to him. He has done it and has a wiring harness to make it work.

Make sure to size the wire, the relay and the fuses to the wattage of the lights + a little for the initial surge.
2 x 55 watts = 110 watts total / 12 volts = 9.2 amps so the wire could be 14 gauge but use 12 ga for the battery power, a 20 amp fuse and a 30 amp automotive relay and that should do it.

Sorry for getting windy, if you have any questions, just ask !

I have done all that, the non OEM relay works. If I take the wire from pin 85 to the drivers side power it doesnt work when you use the OEM switch. But if i take the wire from pin 85 and touch it to the battery the relay switches and the lights turn on.

OK then lets try the statement you made about putting the passenger’s side power and grounds together… what happened there, could be a shot which in turn would shot the driver’s side.

If the wiring is OK then the relay, fuse or as you suggested the switch is shot.
Since you said the fuse is good, and if you separated the wiring and still nothing works, then it could be the switch; have you looked at one of the OEM Sw’s, they just short of $uck !

OK new route !
First disconnect the OEM Fog Light wiring.
Separate any wires that may be joined together and disconnect any wires connected to the new relay.
Try the OEM Fog Sw and see if the relay is clicking, if not then you need to try a new fuse, then a new switch.
Once you get the OEM Relay to actuate then you can start over with the new Light Wring.

Sorry I can’t be of more help, I am just approaching this as I would my own truck.

Luck,

If the OEM Relay is clicking and the only problem is the indicator light contact Buggman and get one of his LED Replacement Bulb/Mount Assemblies in what ever color, and put it in and you will be good to go.
now you can heat shrink up the wiring you don’t need (don’t connect any existing wires together).
Hook up the new relay and check it before attaching the battery power for the new lights.
Good Luck,

I was thinking…… the Fog Light Sw is on a negative switched circuit, maybe that has something to do with the light not coming on.

Send Buggman a PM and ask him about it or maybe Bob will come in.
Also, is the bulb in the sw a good one ?

I skimmed through some of this thread just now & I think I remember you said you connected pin85 to POWER? Pin85 should go to ground in most instances.

If it's not the switch or relay giving you troubles & nobody else has any good ideas, you could always bypass all the OEM wiring completely & use one of my conversion kits.

You put a std toggle sw where in the power line ?
Did you run your own wires or use OEM Wiring ?

FYI, 85 and 86 are interchangeable, it is just DC Sw on a coil and either way will actuate the relay.

I do not have one of Buggman adapter harnesses but since FORD in its infinite wisdom, has chosen to use a negative switching system this harness may be the only way to use the OEM Sw… or leave the OEM Wiring in pplace and use the actual OEM Fig Light wires to trip the relay.

I ran my own wires, i used the hella wiring harness and a spdt?(on-off) switch. It works perfectly now.

I kind of put finding the porblem with the OEM wiring on the back burner hahaha. Thanks for all your help.

And Buggmann, if I cant figure out the problem Ill probably be in the market for your harness hahaha

OK so all you need to do is determine the problem with the OEM Sw/harness; you did have the lights running so that is funny.

Buggmann harness is a lot easier than trying to figure out switching the neg vs pos wiring systems but first try and get the OEM wiring figured out. If you can get power to the OEM Light wiring at the bumper then you can use that wiring to work the relay in the Hella Harness.

good Luck and let us know along the way how things are going...
